Tougen Anki Anime Kicks Off with Action, Dark Powers, and a Cursed Hero

Tougen Anki Anime Kicks Off with Action, Dark Powers, and a Cursed Hero

Info in Movie News | The highly anticipated anime Tougen Anki made its debut on July 11, 2025, unveiling to fans a dark and sinister world of supernaturally gifted bloodlines and ancient feuds. Based on Yura Urushibara’s manga Tougen Anki: Legend of the Cursed Blood, the series marries quick rendition with emotional turmoil through the narrative of its protagonist, Shiki Ichinose, who is very troubled.

According to Crunchyroll, Studio Hibari is the producer of the anime and streams it every week. Ato Nonaka is the director, with Hiroyuki Hashimoto assisting, Yukie Sugawara writing the series composition and scripts, Ryoko Amisaki designing characters, KOHTA YAMAMOTO providing music, they are the team behind this production that is experienced in eliciting intense shounen energy.

At the core of the plot is Shiki Ichinose, a reckless and aimless adolescent who is living with his foster father named Tsuyoshi. Shiki’s life is completely changed when a sudden attack by an unknown person reveals that his bloodline is an evil secret, he is an Oni, a race of people generally feared and known for their amazing power and violent history. In a very sad incident, Tsuyoshi, who is revealed to be a Momotaro (the Oni’s ancient enemy), gives up his life for Shiki, thus setting free the demonic blood that was hidden in the boy.

The story that is henceforth is not a simple story of a revenge act, but also one of self-awareness and inner dispute. Naito Mudano, a teacher at the Rakshasa Academy which is a secret school where young Oni get training to control their powers, soon comes to Shiki. Theirs can really be a tough choice, if Shiki is to follow the rage that is inside him or find a new one that will break the hate cycle.

On one side, the show does not waste any time in dragging the viewers straight into the world filled with wars and violence of one side groups. The war between the Oni and the Momotaro has been going on for so many generations that it is hard to count, and secret organizations from both sides are still operating behind the scenes. The story follows a plot very similar to that of shounen anime classic, and Blue Exorcist is often the first thing that comes to people’s mind in this context. The main character of Blue Exorcist is also dealing with his own inner demons and a past that is not very peaceful.

Technically speaking, Tougen Anki is a big surprise performance-wise. On one hand, however, some fans were doubting Studio Hibari’s capability to run fairly saturated battle scenes, on the other hand, the animation, that mixes 2D and CGI, helps highlights transformation/interventions moments, particularly when Shiki is changing to his Oni form. CGI is used in a very minimalistic way and it doesn’t hinder the story but rather complements it.

Besides that, character design is still very much in line with the manga. There are no big changes in the depiction of supporting characters, while Shiki’s Oni transformation as a horror incident is repeatedly referred to and portrayed with significant changes in the input parameters such as color, hair, and expression that vividly describe the transition of his identity. Additional characters reveal a possible next story arc with plenty of parties and betrayals as well as experiments on the theme of the blood feud.

Overall, Tougen Anki offers a solid start. It might not reinvent the shounen formula, but it delivers strong visuals, a complex protagonist, and just enough mystery to keep audiences coming back. For fans of dark fantasy and supernatural battles, it’s one of this season’s anime worth watching.

You can stream Tougen Anki now on Crunchyroll with English subtitles.
