Liam Neeson Shines in Hilarious Reboot of The Naked Gun Ahead of August Release

Info in Movie News | Liam Neeson is hardly associated with slapstick comedy at all and when one talks about the comedy genre nobody would probably link him to the upcoming The Naked Gun reboot, however, he could be a twist in the story. The actor most famous for thriller movies full of action is here again, but this time he goes into the ridiculous world of Frank Drebin, a character that the late Leslie Nielsen once made famous. Directed by Akiva Schaffer (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping), with writing support from Dan Gregor and Doug Mand (Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, How I Met Your Mother), the movie has already begun winning over fans and critics alike.

According to Collider, the movie's initial screenings have delivered big laughs, with many calling it one of the funniest comedies in recent memory. Neeson previously told Collider he felt nervous about taking on the part. “It’s a huge honor to play Frank Drebin,” he said, “but this kind of comedy lives and dies by timing, and I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off for a full-length film.”

Turns out, he could. The Naked Gun has not only jokes but also visual comedy and absurd situations that are surprisingly cohesive into a story. Neeson's serious character personality represents the situation that the movie is full of so mad energy that is from his deadpan perfectly toning the reboot's.

Gregor and Mand have done their best to create a script that has a balance of nostalgic vibes and modern punchlines. It's a clever representation of old-school parody spirit without feeling outdated, which gives new sight gags, wordplays, and ridiculous setups that continue the pace of the movie.

Neeson is supported by a vibrant cast, featuring Pamela Anderson, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, CCH Pounder, Paul Walter Hauser, Busta Rhymes, Kevin Durand, and Danny Huston. The comparative abundance of comedic and dramatic talents among the performers gives the confusion more dimensions, which is exactly what Neeson wanted in the course of the initial casting talks.

Celebrities are getting in on the hype. Josh Gad called it “the funniest movie I’ve seen in OVER a decade” on his Instagram story. He even added that the creative team may have “just saved theatrical comedy.” Kristen Schaal was also one of them, and she appealed to the fans to see it in the theaters for the fullest effect.

This movie, which has Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins as producers, and Akiva Schaffer and Daniel M. Stillman as executive producers, brings the best of the comedy world with the funniest talent and smart directing to the table. Schaffer, famous for his eccentric yet successful approach, is still loved for blending a respectful attitude towards the original with a new and quick-moving one.

The Naked Gun hits cinemas on 1 August 2025. This reboot could be the comeback of the laughing in the cinema if the early talk is to be believed, the cast is great and Neeson demonstrates that he can act seriously in the most absurd way imaginable.
