SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants Brings 3D Comeback This December

SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants Brings 3D Comeback This December

Info in Movie News | The beloved Nickelodeon series is about to make a comeback this December with The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, a new animated feature scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters on 19th December 2025. The movie, which includes new characters as well as the old ones and also that famous SpongeBob comedy, is definitely going to energize the fans no end and will drag them right to the deepest corners of the ocean.

According to Animation Magazine, the plot unravels SpongeBob's odyssey as he endeavours to convince Mr. Krabs of his capabilities by going after the legendary Flying Dutchman, a figure that has always been a source of mystery in the series. In this new and challenging expeditions of the strange ocean, SpongeBob is nothing but going deeper than he ever did before, through some creepy underwater places where even he hasn’t got the courage to go.

The movie pays tribute to its heritage by bringing back the original voice actors although some of them have also done new characters. Tom Kenny came back as SpongeBob, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy, and Mr. Lawrence as Plankton. Newcomers who infuse the tale with great vibes are George Lopez, Ice Spice (Isis Gaston), Arturo Castro, Sherry Cola, and Regina Hall. Mark Hamill also joins the cast, taking over the role of the Flying Dutchman from Brian Doyle-Murray — a casting shift that’s sure to add a fresh spark for longtime fans.

The ongoing shift of the franchise towards 3D animation is also reflected in the movie Search for SquarePants. The series is generally 2D, but this movie, as well as Sponge Out of Water and Sponge on the Run, rely on a heavily stylized 3D look that enriches the movie’s cinematic scale. It is a bright, bouncy, and full of texture movie, which is just right for SpongeBob’s out-of-this-world underwater antics.

It is because of this new feature that Derek Drymon, a longtime SpongeBob writer and creative partner, makes his debut as the director of the movie. The screenplay comes from Emmy-winning writer Pam Brady (Smurfs, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken) and Matt Lieberman (Scoob!, The Addams Family). The story was developed by SpongeBob veterans Marc Ceccarelli & Kaz, alongside Brady.

Produced in association with Domain Entertainment and MRC, the movie is shepherded by producers Lisa Stewart, Pam Brady, and Aaron Dem. Executive producers include Ceccarelli, Vincent Waller, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, and Andrew Lary.

Although SpongeBob has been engaged in various spin-offs such as Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie and Plankton: The Movie in the recent years, Search for SquarePants still represents his first theatrical release after 10 years. The previous big-screen movie, Sponge Out of Water, was released in 2015 and had a $55 million opening weekend, becoming the highest-grossing animation of that year.

Both old and new fans let down will not expect a laff mix of vintage SpongeBob craziness, great adventure, and funny new characters. If you have been following the show for a long time or are just along for the ride, the new movie has a lot of underwater charm and crazy comedy to offer. Take your jellyfish net, Bikini Bottom’s brightest sponge is geared up to find something bigger than himself.
