Resident Evil Reboot Set for 2026 with a Pure Horror Touch

Info in Movie News | The Resident Evil franchise is set to return to the big screen with a reboot that promises a more faithful approach to its classical horror roots. This time, Zach Cregger, director of Barbarian and Weapons, has been entrusted with the task. The film will remain under the wing of Sony Pictures and is scheduled to be released on September 18, 2026.

Resident Evil Returns to Its Horror Roots

Deadline has reported that this reboot will bring back the terrifying atmosphere characteristic of Capcom's Resident Evil games. Unlike previous movie adaptations focused mostly on action, the latest project will reportedly concentrate more on the horror and suspense elements so cherished by fans.

Zach Cregger, who gained attention with his success in Barbarian (2022), has been trusted to handle this ambitious project. He also acts as the writer along with Shay Hatten, who was previously involved in John Wick: Chapter 3 & 4, as well as Ballerina.

"I've been a long-time super fan of this series and to bring it to life in a film is an enormous honor," Cregger said in his official statement.

Sony Not Dropping Its Golden Franchise

All of the previous Resident Evil movie series, which included the six films that Paul W.S. Anderson directed and Milla Jovovich starred in, as well as, Johannes Roberts-directed Resident Evil: Raccoon City (2021) version, have been released by Sony Pictures. With global accumulations of $1.2 billion, Resident Evil was ranked among the most successful video game franchises that have been adapted into a movie, which was only behind Super Mario Bros ($1.36 billion) and the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy ($1.2 billion).

Seeing the potential of this franchise, Sony retains the distribution rights to the latest film and has not handed it over to another studio. They have seemingly shown high enthusiasm for this project by directly setting the release date to September 2026.

"Zach is one of the most talented horror directors at the moment. His brilliant approach in revitalizing and refreshing the Resident Evil franchise makes this project one of Sony's major 2026 releases," said Sanford Panitch president of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group.

Production and Behind-The-Scenes Team

The film will be produced by Constantin Film, which has long managed the Resident Evil franchise. They will be collaborating with PlayStation Productions and Vertigo Entertainment. Big names involved in the production include Robert Kulzer from Constantin, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo, and Nicole Brown overseeing the project for Columbia Pictures.

Besides Resident Evil, Cregger is also preparing the horror film Weapons that is to be released under the supervision of Warner Bros in early 2026. With two major horror films in the same year, Cregger's status as an important genre director is now well established.

Fans' Expectations: Can't Wait!

The film has so far managed to pull the kind of emotions that fans were drawn to, so the expectations of another new Resident Evil movie can be summed up in the wish to see it as a true representation of the original classic, which is hardcore survival horror with the atmosphere filled with thrill and horror.

Would you rate this project as the most successful adaptation of Resident Evil so far? We will all become wise folks on September 18, 2026, the worldwide release of the movie to find out the answer.
