Mamono: A Dark Tale of Love and Obsession in Japanese Drama

Info in Movie News | The Japanese and Korean drama industries are once again collaborating to bring audiences Mamono, an original psychological thriller produced by TV Asahi and South Korea’s SLL. The drama is set to premiere on April 18, 2025, airing every Friday at 11:15 PM JST (+9 UTC) on TV Asahi.

Mamono is a word in English which means "demon", "monster", and "supernatural creature". In the world of Japanese folklore, it's the phrase that often refers to entities that have mysterious powers which can form into different forms—be they kind or dangerous.

According to CinemaCafe, Mamono is a movie that challenges the audience with its storyline, asking questions around love, obsession, and the thin line separating passion from destruction. At its core, it is a story about Ayame Kajin, an extremely successful and confident lawyer who has a very bright future, and she gets into a compromising situation after meeting Itayet Minamoto, a person with a very dark past who is suspected of domestic violence and the murder of a well-known professor. As they become drawn to each other, Ayame is pulled into a web of psychological tension, where love and peril are two sides of the same coin.

What makes Mamono particularly compelling is its deep psychological exploration of human relationships. While she fights in words for the vulnerable, Ayame holds a deep-set hatred of the women she accepts as weak. Initially, Minamoto is a typical young man who gradually discovers his controlling and possessive character, so the issue of love and domination becomes somewhat of a game of cat and mouse.

Addition to intrigue the international drama is its production team. The initiative is being led by South Korean producer Jin Hyuk (The Master's Sun) and Japanese director Yusuke Taki (Ooku). Erika Seki, who is recognized for the adaptation of My Love from the Star for the Japanese audience, she will write the script.

With a powerhouse cast, an experienced creative team, and a storyline full of suspense and depth of psychology, Mamono is set to be one of the most awaited dramas of 2025. Its premiere on TV Asahi's television channel will be nothing but magnificent!
