After saving Nevermore from the undead pilgrim Joseph Crackstone in Season 1, Wednesday has earned a cult-like following among her peers. However, the goth queen of gloom is rather unimpressed. However, the goth queen of gloom is not satisfied. “I liked it better when I was feared and hated,” she grumbles, while her peers gather around her, begging for autographs. Info in Movie News | Box office history was made last Saturday when the Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2 broke several records. Despite not being released internationally yet, the film, which premiered during the Chinese New Year holiday, has become the highest-grossing film of the year.

As reported by Collider on Sunday, February 9, Ne Zha 2 consistently garnered over $50 million each day since its debut and has now officially become the first film in 2025 to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

Additionally, Ne Zha 2 has also been recorded as the highest-grossing film in a single country as well as the highest-grossing non-Hollywood film in history.

On its second Saturday of screening, Ne Zha 2 collected nearly $85 million, enough to propel it beyond the $1 billion mark solely in China.

This accomplishment was achieved within just 12 days. With an additional presale ticket sales amounting to $33 million on the following Sunday, the film's total revenue has now reached $1.03 billion. This figure is nearly equivalent to that of Moana 2, which was amassed over a span of more than 70 days of global screening. This achievement also places Ne Zha 2 among the top ten highest-grossing animated films of all time.

By exceeding a revenue of $936 million on its 11th day, Ne Zha 2 successfully toppled a decade-long record held by Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing film in a single country.

These remarkable achievements further underscore the massive growth of China's film market in recent years. Although Chinese audiences enthusiastically welcomed Hollywood blockbusters in the past, post-pandemic, the movie market in the country has been predominantly occupied by domestic productions.

This achievement cannot be denied from the population of the country, which stands at 1.411 billion. If only 25% were prospective movie viewers and movie enthusiasts, the count might reach around 300 billion.

Additionally, deriving inspiration from the 16th-century novel Investiture of the Gods, Ne Zha 2 was directed by Jiaozi (also known as Yu Yang), who once again delved into the adventures of the powerful demon-slaying hero. In this sequel, Nezha allies with dragon prince Ao Bing to protect the mainland from sea monster attacks.

Many have praised the film for its unique yet authentic interpretation of Chinese mythology, wrapped with humor, strong family and identity themes, and visually stunning animation.

The first Ne Zha film itself successfully grossed $725 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film in China and the highest-earning non-US animated film of that year.
