Gundam Live Action Starts Production, Ready to Break Into Hollywood!

Info in Movie News | Bandai Namco Filmworks of Japan has officially announced a Hollywood adaptation of the classic live-action mech franchise, Gundam. Other than the first poster, the news was first revealed Wednesday, Feb. 5.

According to Channel News Asia on February 5, 2023, Jim Mickle, who directed the Netflix series Sweet Tooth, will helm the film. Legendary Entertainment, the influential production company that supported Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy, is also behind the project. The two firms have struck a joint financing agreement to produce the film movie.

Originally announced back in 2018 and later put on hold, this news is sure to excite anime fans as Bandai Namco Filmworks America prepares to bring Gundam to cinemas!

The movie's release date and synopsis have not been revealed, though a teaser poster has been released.

Born from the mind of Yoshiyuki Tomino, Gundam emerged from a 1979 anime series titled “Mobile Suit Gundam” in Japan. Its success at the box office also soared to create toys, video games and TV series generating, on average, over $900 million in revenues each year. Bandai Namco have previously stated that the franchise makes $900+ million annually.

Gundam has released 25 anime series, 34 animated films, and 27 original anime productions. The RX-78-2 Gundam has already seen screen time, making an appearance in 2018’s “Ready Player One,” where it fought Mechagodzilla.

In the original story, “Mobile Suit Gundam” is set in the year 0079 during the Universal Century time period, during the war between the Zeon Empire and the Earth Federation. Hailing from the oppressive forces of Zeon; the Federation was inevitably forced to create the revolutionary Gundam mecha; which was to be responsible for ultimately turning the tide of the war. The story follows Amuro Ray, a 15-year-old boy caught in the middle of this war who must ultimately face off against Zeon’s flying ace, the enigmatic Char Aznable.

Bandai Namco and Legendary Entertainment will trickle out more information about this feature film in due time.
