Matt Damon Will Play Odysseus in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey

Info in Movie News | Matt Damon is set to take on the role of the legendary Greek hero Odysseus in Christopher Nolan's upcoming blockbuster, "The Odyssey". He will join a glittering cast that includes Tom Holland, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal and John Leguizamo.

The news over Damon's participation appeared Monday morning on the official X odysseymovie account. This post featured an image of Damon in character, captioned: "Matt Damon is Odysseus. A film by Christopher Nolan, #TheOdysseyMovie in theaters July 17, 2026.”

The movie depicts the story of the Greek hero, Odysseus, as he makes his way home after the Trojan War. The story was first written by the ancient Greek poet Homer more than 2,000 years ago, and is still widely read by people throughout the world today.

Nolan has an ongoing relationship with Universal, which will distribute the film. In a December announcement, the company described “The Odyssey” as a “myth action epic filmed around the globe utilizing the latest Imax film technology, bringing Homer’s foundational story to the Imax screen for the first time.”

Christopher Nolan not just wrote the screenplay but is the director and producer of the movie. His wife, Emma Thomas, will also produce via their collaborative banner, Syncopy.

Parts of “The Odyssey” will shoot in Sicily, the location that the original text identifies as the one where Odysseus wandered, according to an exclusive report by Variety in January. The production will officially kick off on the famous “Goat island” of Favignana in the spring. Colonnades, remains of ancient buildings, and watchtowers built into steep hillsides can all be found here — thought to be the place where Homer based the landing of Odysseus and his crew.

Other than that, “The Odyssey” is Damon and Nolan’s third collaboration together. The acclaimed actor behind “The Departed” also played Leslie Groves in Nolan’s seven-times Oscar-winning 2023 feature “Oppenheimer” and made a cameo in his epic science-fiction film “Interstellar.”
