Live-Action Adaptation of Blank Canvas: My So-called Artist’s Journey

Info in Movie News | The long-awaited live action adaptation of Akiko Higashimura’s cult autobiographical manga Blank Canvas: My So-called Artist’s Journey has rounded up a whole new pack of eight actors to join its cast. Kicking off on May 16, 2025, it has fans buzzing buzz about this new story.

A 1.30-minute trailer was also released on Youtube to commemorate the announcement of the new cast on, more specifically featuring the likes of Ai Mikami as Kitami, a stylish classmate of Akiko; Mei Hata as Sato, a junior in the art class and future manga assistant of Akiko.

Include Jin Suzuki as Imada or Ima, a misfit with an uncanny knack for art; Fuju Kamio as Nishimura, a university student from Kanazawa College of Art.

The all-star cast also features Kenjiro Tsuda as Oka, a Shueisha editor who recognizes Akiko's one-of-a-kind painting talent. Megumi co-stars as Akiko’s mother, and Nao Omori joins as her father.

Rounding out the cast is the comedy duo, Cream Stew's Tepper Arita, who will portray Nakata sensei. He is the middle school art club advisor who sings the praises of Akiko's artistry.

The live-action series, headlined by Mei Nagago as Akiko, and Yo Oizumi as her art tutor, Hidaka, will be directed by Kazuaki Seki.

Serving as Seki's second within the screenplay department will be Date-san, collaborating alongside the original manga creator of Black Canvas, Higashimura herself. Meanwhile, Yuki Munakata will take the reins in the musical composition for Blank Canvas live action.

Originally launched in Chocohana under Shueisha's publication from November 2011 to January 2015, Higashimura's Blank Canvas My So-called Artist's Journey spans five volumes.

A live-action adaptation that tells the story of high school student Akiko Hayashi’s ambition to be a successful manga artist in the future. Akiko tries hard to improve her drawing ability to realize her dream. Akiko thinks that joining an art class is a shortcut for her to success and also to solve her problem. However, Akiko is surprised that her new art instructor is a katana wielder and didn’t concern about manga. Yet, Akiko feels maybe this special art teacher is what she need.
