Info in Movie News | The remake of The Thomas Crown Affair is officially underway, and it’s shaping up to be one of the boldest projects in Amazon MGM Studios’ lineup. This time, the beloved heist-romance is getting a modern twist under the direction of Michael B. Jordan, who’s also taking on the lead role.
According to Deadline, two major names have joined the project: Oscar-winning actor Kenneth Branagh in a mysterious (and reportedly villainous) role, and Oscar-winning producer Charles Roven, best known for his work on Oppenheimer. Under his Atlas Entertainment banner, Roven will also produce the movie with Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo of Outlier Society.
Jordan plays the lead role of Thomas Crown, a very clever and mysterious billionaire who secretly is a senior-class thief. The movie will also feature Taylor Russell who made a big impact with her performance in Bones and All. The movie explores the dark and twisted relationship of a chess game between Crown and the woman who is trying to catch him, a smart insurance detective who not only becomes emotionally involved with her case but also can’t help falling for her target.
Far from the first, the movie makers have kept the storyline a bit of a mystery. However it is still a re-telling of The Thomas Crown Affair, a story filled with fast moving action, seduction, and psychological mind games. The 1999 version of the story starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo was a remake of the first one which was released in 1968 with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, and now it is a cult favorite mainly because of its smooth visuals and charming leads.
In this new iteration of the series, the screenplay was penned by Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3, Hobbs & Shaw), who collaborated on the latest draft with Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson. Filming is expected to start this summer, and the movie has a scheduled exclusive theatrical run planned for March 5, 2027.
The cast is definitely more powerful with Branagh’s presence. He is after roles in Oppenheimer, Tenet, and Dunkirk by Christopher Nolan, and recently, he finished filming Mayday, a co-starring action-adventure movie with Ryan Reynolds. Branagh, famous for his versatility and charismatic character, is expected to be a main opponent to Jordan’s Crown.
Behind the scenes, producer Charles Roven continues to be a dominant force in prestige moviemaking. His production company, Atlas Entertainment, is currently finishing Mercy, a sci-fi thriller for Amazon MGM starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson, and prepping Road House 2, the follow-up to the 2024 hit reboot.
This movie is now the second major directorial work of Michael B. Jordan after Creed III, and people are very curious to see how he will bring new life to a classic while playing the main role. With a strong cast, experienced producers, and an interesting storyline, this remake of The Thomas Crown Affair can be a very successful movie in the heist genre.
Fans of romantic thrillers with a punchy story and great style will be definitely interested in this movie to be released in 2027.
