Info in Movie News | Garfield is back, and yes, he still hates Mondays. Chris Pratt has completed the deal for the role of the voice of the world’s laziest cat for Alcon Entertainment’s next animated sequel to The Garfield Movie. Sony Pictures is going to be the distributor for the movie again all over the world (except for China).
According to Deadline, The sequel is still at the early stages of production, and the producers are reaching out to the writers and directors to get their opinions if they want to join the team. While the presence of the new cast members is still a secret, the fans can anticipate that there will be news very soon. Mark Dindal, the director of the first movie, has assembled a star-studded voice cast including Samuel L. Jackson, Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, and Snoop Dogg. Now with Pratt returning, this time also in a producer role, the character of Garfield is set to headline yet another lasagna-filled adventure.
The new Garfield Movie is a May 2024 release that quickly set the record straight as a global box office hit, raking in over $260 million. That level of success obviously made a sequel a no-brainer. DNEG Animation, the studio behind the first movie’s visuals, is also the animation partner for this one, thus, the franchise is assured of retaining its signature look and good quality. Production is also being co-handled by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios, which will again collaborate with Alcon on creative and technical aspects.
Jim Davis is a cartoonist who gave life to Garfield when he created the comic strip in 1978. For a long time, he has been a name that is familiar to almost every home, if only for his sarcastic humor, his love for lasagna, and his hatred for anything that required even a little effort, especially on Monday. The comic’s timeless appeal has allowed it to thrive across various media, including TV specials, animated series, and now, major theatrical movies.
Chris Pratt’s decision to reprise his role as the voice of Garfield is yet another indicator of a successful animation career. Not long ago, he gave a voice to the famous character of Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and also to Emmet in The LEGO Movie series. Besides that, he was a part of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and he is on the list of the stars for Amazon MGM’s Mercy as well as Apple’s Way of the Warrior Kid. He is of course also to be seen in and producing this new Garfield movie, which further illustrates his staying power in the family-oriented blockbusters.
Original Garfield creator Jim Davis will be back on board as executive producer with Amuse's Bridget McMeel. The producing team also includes John Cohen (The Garfield Movie, Despicable Me), Steven P. Wegner, and Alcon co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, who made the official announcement regarding Pratt’s return. Jeannette Hill, EVP of Business and Legal Affairs, negotiated the deal on Alcon’s behalf.
On a similar note, the storyline for the sequel has not been revealed in detail, however, fans can look forward to the movie retaining the offbeat and funny vibe that the initial movie had. If the two studios decide to rope in a mass of new fans for the sequel as well as they did with the first, then the next chapter of Garfield’s story should go even further into his crazy and funny world, perhaps even bringing in some new characters along the way.
Until then, one thing’s for sure, Garfield will still hate Mondays, still crave lasagna, and still make us laugh at just how little he wants to do with his day. And honestly, who can blame him?
