Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke 4K Re-Release, Takes Over IMAX Screens Amid AI Controversy

Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke 4K Re-Release, Takes Over IMAX Screens Amid AI Controversy

Info in Movie News | Studio Ghibli is back in news with the 4K re-release of Princess Mononoke which was originally made in 1997. The 1997 classic Princess Mononoke by Ghibli Studios is now on display in more than 330 IMAX theatres across North America. The movie, which tells the story of Hayao Miyazaki, brought in a receipt of $1.2 million in the pilot screenings, thus making it also the official launch of the movie.

According to Variety, Chance Huskey, VP of Distribution at GKids, expressed the studio’s excitement: “In a time when technology tries to replicate humanity, we are thrilled that audiences value a theatrical experience that respects and celebrates Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s masterpiece in all its cinematic hand-drawn glory.”

OpenAI’s release of their latest AI-generated image software became viral and caused many AI fans to show off AI-produced imitations of the Ghibli style. There has been concern raised by a large number of the animation and art communities that this technology could cut across the traditional artistic processes that require a great number of people to put time, skill, and effort into them.

The person who co-founded Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, has been candidly criticizing the AI-generated animation. Miyazaki talked about it in a 2016 conference saying that how deeply irritated he was, by saying that the idea had made him quite uneasy and even called it "creepy."

Miyazaki added that it was out of the question for him to use AI in his works and said he could only make art that has no AI involved. According to him, it disrespected the conventional animation that is drawn by hand and based on humans, not technology.

For Miyazaki, the essence of animation rests in the painstaking human work that stands behind every frame which is also a sentiment described by Akihiko Yamashita, the former supervising animator on Howl’s Moving Castle. Yamashita elaborated on how Miyazaki takes personal control over the animation process from top to bottom, making sure the art is deeply human.

The AI advancement, following its pace of development, asks the questions about future changes in creativities and the taste to the handmade arts to be vanished or not. There is no doubt that Studio Ghibli is not willing to give up its hand-drawn animation tradition, as it is their weapon in the battle for preserving the human touch in cinema production.

If you’re very excited to watch Princess Mononoke in the largest possible size, then you must go and see it during the period when it’s available in the IMAX theater near you!
