The Alto Knights Stumbles at the Box Office, but Receives Positive Response from the Audience

Info in Movie News | The newly published feature film from Robert De Niro, The Alto Knights, floundered at the box office in North America, opening passively with just $3 million in the first week. This movie was only able to make it up at a global level which was a shocking number as the film had the big production and involved the big names of people. Once again, Warner Bros. received a punch in the face after some movies in the release lineup failed financially, among them were Mickey 17 and Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1.

According to the Collider, Barry Levinson directed The Alto Knights and it stars De Niro as both the mobster Frank Costello and Vito Genovese. The decision to let De Niro play two main characters was one of the most criticized aspects. Collider's critic Aidan Kelley believes that the move felt more like a gimmick rather than an artistic decision with thematic depth. This film was also criticized for being too much about overexplaining the relationship of the two main characters rather than showing it through more creative narrative.

In spite of the fact that the film received 38% only on Rotten Tomatoes with the review of the critics, it actually got a better response from the audience. Audience rating at the same website up to 70%. It is higher compared to Levinson's previous project in the last decade. It means that despite the fact that the film failed to be widely received, there is still a group of spectators that enjoy the De Niro story and performance.

The flatland of The Alto Knights at the box office was further enervated by the lack of another big hit besides Snow White, which harried ahead with $42 million at the weekend. Meanwhile, other movies that are otherwise considered less successful like Mickey 17 and Captain America: Brave New World were able to still exceed this film in earnings. With a poor debut and ever-decreasing anticipation, the life of The Alto Knights in the cinema seems to be short.

However, the movie is still at theaters, and time will tell if the movie not only does it, but also it gets the boost from the positive audience response in the upcoming weeks.
