The story is concerned with the inhumane treatment of Native American children that took place at St. Paul’s Indian Mission School in Marty, South Dakota.
The information from Deadline tells that Nine Little Indians was started almost a decade ago and now the project is being finished. The aim of the film is to portray the plight of the nine Charbonneau sisters and their peers who not only experienced a lot of verbal, but also physical sexual, and other types of abuse, that was usually perpetrated by those who were supposed to educate them. The film also looks into the issue of the mass graves that are said to contain the remains of the children killed at the school. One of the saddest stories in the movie is that of Geraldine "Gerri" Charbonneau, who had her baby born after the rape taken away from her.
Native American boarding schools, set up more than a century ago, had a primary goal of assimilating the youth into the mainstream culture of Anglo-America. However, the conduct of this process was often characterized by inhuman treatment, for example, children draining off the language and identity of the children and subjecting them to a variety of abuses. Nine Little Indians aims to reveal these cruelties and to be the voice of survivors who for decades have been seeking justice.
The most interesting part of the film is that two former nuns and an abbot, who once supervised priests accused of committing serious crimes, are also involved in the documentary- besides the victims.
