Synopsis: Alice in Borderland Season 1 (2020) Series

Ryōhei Arisu, a video game enthusiast, finds himself trapped in a deserted Tokyo alongside his best friends, Karube and Chōta, after entering a public restroom to hide from the police. They soon discover that they are now in Borderland, a deadly world where they must participate in life-threatening games to extend their “visa.” If the visa expires, a laser from the sky kills them instantly. Their first challenge, Dead or Alive, reveals the brutal nature of these games, and they quickly realize there is no escape.

While continuing to play, they discover that each game is divided into suits of playing cards — Spades for strength, Clubs for teamwork, Diamonds for intelligence and Hearts for psychological manipulation. Arisu's tactical skills come in handy, but his newfound social life crumbles when he is roped into a Seven of Hearts game, with only one remaining player. Karube and Chōta give their lives to save Arisu, leaving him desolate and alone. He later encounters Usagi, an elite mountaineer, and the two go in search of answers at The Beach, a community populated by survivors who think if they collect all the playing cards, they can be free.

At The Beach, power struggles erupt when its leader, Hatter, is mysteriously killed in the same facially slashed way as a co-leader and a violent coup leads Aguni to thrust forward. The final game, Ten of Hearts, transforms The Beach into a witch hunt: players must find and execute a murderer to survive. Arisu figures out that the supposed victim has killed herself to game the game. Following their victory, Arisu and Usagi learn that the Game Masters have already finished, and emerge to a new, more deadly stage of the competition—introducing the Face Card challenges. With the King of Spades game underway, Arisu and Usagi are in for an even bigger battle for survival.
