Pierce Brosnan Stars as Boxing Trainer Brendan Ingle in Biopic, Giant

Pierce Brosnan Stars as Boxing Trainer Brendan Ingle in Biopic, Giant

Info in Movie News | Pierce Brosnan continues to prove his versatility as an actor with back-to-back screen appearances. After wrapping up the Paramount+, crime series MobLand, in June, the award-winning star is shifting gears from gritty drama to emotional sports storytelling. His next major movie role sees him stepping into the shoes of a real-life legend in the upcoming British biopic Giant, which follows the rise of iconic boxer Prince Naseem “Naz” Hamed.

According to Collider, Giant centers around the intense and deeply personal relationship between Naz and his long-time trainer Brendan Ingle, portrayed by Brosnan. The newly released trailer reveals the former James Bond actor in a completely unrecognizable transformation, sporting a thick accent, aged features, and the demeanor of a tough but caring mentor. Rising star Amir El-Masry takes on the role of Naz, delivering raw energy as the flashy, talented boxer who changed the face of British boxing in the 1990s.

Directed and written by Gangs of London’s Rowan Athale, Giant has been in development since 2020 and officially began production in early 2023. While initial reports linked Paddy Considine and Mena Massoud to the project, the final cast now includes Katherine Dow Blyton, Isabelle Bonfrer, Arian Nik, Austin Haynes, and Rocco Haynes. The movie is produced by Stuart Ford (AGC Studios), Mark Lane (Tea Shop Productions), and Kevin Sampson (White Star Productions), with executive producers Sylvester Stallone and Braden Aftergood for Balboa Productions.

Set in Sheffield, Giant is a rags-to-riches tale that traces Naz’s journey from a working-class background to becoming a world champion and cultural icon. However, it is not merely a sports biopic that the movie explores the emotional and improbable collaboration between the Muslim-Yemeni fighter and his Irish Catholic trainer. Their relationship, which was both motivating and challenging, is shown as the energy carrying Naz's success.

The movie's summary clearly indicates that it will provide a combination of the high-octane in-ring fight sequences and the soft, heartfelt episodes back stage.

“With exhilarating and visceral scenes in the ring, coupled with deeply moving and intimate moments behind the curtain, Giant is an inspiring biopic of one of the greatest showmen the sporting world has ever seen, the untold true story of the boy behind The Prince.”

The trailer has in its core the cinematographic desire of the movie to combine stylized boxing scenes with the natural character work. Athale’s directing is on both the spectacle and the story’s heart, to give something different from the usual sports drama.

Giant is still without an official release date; nevertheless, it is expected to be released in cinemas shortly. After that, Brosnan’s newest movie, The Thursday Murder Club, will be out in theaters on August 22 and from August 28, it will be available on Netflix.

In short order, Brosnan takes on two diverse roles, continuing to reinvent his path in his later career. No matter if he is debunking crimes or helping champions to be formed, what is obvious is that the veteran actor has no plans to slow down anytime soon.
