Channing Tatum Hides in Toy Store Roof in New Crime Thriller Roofman
Info in Movie News | Channing Tatum may have lit up the MCU as Gambit last year, but his next role is something completely different, and grounded in real life. Tatum takes center stage in Roofman, a gritty new crime thriller based on the wild true story of Jeffrey Manchester. Paramount Pictures has just dropped the first official trailer for the movie, and it reveals Tatum playing a fugitive who takes refuge in the attic of a Toys “R” Us store. The movie is set to hit theaters exclusively on October 10.
According to Collider, Roofman follows the unbelievable journey of Manchester, a former Army Ranger who turns to crime after struggling to adjust to civilian life. Known for his bizarre method of entering businesses through the roof, starting with a series of McDonald’s robberies, Manchester earns the nickname “Roofman”. But the movie doesn’t just focus on the heists, it explores the psychological complexity of a man hiding from his past, literally above everyone’s heads.
In Roofman, Tatum adds a layered charm to his character Jeffrey, who after deciding to stay in a secret attic above a toy shop, is still figuring out his plans. His life takes a sudden turn after he meets Leigh, portrayed by Kirsten Dunst, a recently divorced single mom who is just like him and charmed by his charisma. What starts as a quiet getaway very soon unravels into the messy double life, and the movie loves tension as the lies of Jeffrey begin to reveal themselves to him.
The trailer depicts a combination of suspense and intimacy with Tatum's performance as a focal point. Contrary to his last big hit roles, this one is more emotional and vulnerable. Leigh is no longer just the love interest of the movie but becomes the emotional core of the movie as she leads Manchester on a journey of salvation or merely coming to terms with his past.
Roofman is a movie from the director Derek Cianfrance who is known for his emotional movies such as Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines. Cianfrance is also the co-writer of the script with Kirt Gunn, and the executive producer of the movie. The rest of the cast adds serious dramatic weight, Juno Temple (Ted Lasso), Peter Dinklage, Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, and Uzo Aduba all play major roles. Melonie Diaz, Lily Collias, and Jimmy O. Yang round out the ensemble.
For Tatum, Roofman represents a definite declaration that he is not only a charismatic action hero but also someone who is exploring his inner self through deeper roles. This character gives him the opportunity to go beyond comedy and still retain the charm that his audience appreciates. A blend of suspense, emotional and realistic narrative elements, Roofman could be one of his most gripping roles so far.
