While appearing on TODAY, Momoa initially hesitated before casually dropping the bombshell: “I’m not sure if I’m gonna get in trouble for this… but if you didn’t read the books, that’s not my fault!” And just like that, the cat was out of the bag.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Momoa’s return isn’t exactly a surprise for fans of Frank Herbert’s Dune novels. In Dune: Messiah, Duncan Idaho is resurrected as a ghola—a genetically engineered clone created by the Bene Tleilax. But here’s the twist: gholas aren’t just regular clones. They usually don’t remember their past lives, and they can be manipulated into serving someone else’s agenda.
This means that Duncan Idaho 2.0 won’t just be the loyal swordmaster we remember. In fact, his return plays a major role in a conspiracy to overthrow Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), who is now the Emperor. And here’s the real kicker—Paul adores Duncan like a brother. So, is Momoa’s character coming back as a friend or a potential enemy? That’s one of the big questions Dune: Messiah will explore.
A Darker, More Political Story
So, if Dune: Part One was about survival and Dune: Part Two was about Paul's rise to power, then Dune: Messiah is going to be something totally different: darker, more political, and emotionally intense. The movie will cover the aftermath of the rule of Paul, e.g., the jihad, which was brutal and led to billions of lives being taken. A king himself, Paul, is the one who primarily faces betrayals from everywhere − even the closest of his friends have turned against him.
Narrator Denis Villeneuve has already let it slip that part 3 will have a different feel to the first two. “Like Herbert did with Dune: Messiah, I think it’ll be really exciting to do something completely different. It’s the same world, but it’s a new film with new circumstances.”
Paul Atreides is also having a tough time in his personal life. His political marriage with Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) makes it hard for him to keep in touch with his real love, Chani (Zendaya). On the other hand, his sister, Alia Atreides (Anya Taylor-Joy), who is born with full Bene Gesserit awareness, is about to become a strong character in the story.
The film will be out on December 18, 2026, and it is said to be Villeneuve’s last Dune film – for now. Nonetheless, considering the huge success of this series, Warner Bros. might not want to stop at three movies. Some of the fans are discussing whether the Children of Dune will be the next one.
Duncan Idaho: Friend or Foe?
Bringing Duncan Idaho back as a ghola creates an exciting new dynamic. Will he still be the same man who fiercely protected Paul and House Atreides?
