Words of War: The True Story of a Journalist Who Defied an Authoritarian Regime
Info in Movie News | Words of War, the newly released movie will portray the real story of Russian investigative reporter Anna Politkovskaya who with courage told the truth amidst the pressure of an authoritarian regime. Maxine Peake (The Theory of Everything) took on the part of this movie, fresh reminder to the importance of press freedom and the risk they take when suffering injustices. This movie will be released by Rolling Pictures on May 2, 2025, the same day as World Press Freedom Day celebrated by the UN.
According to Collider, Words of War is a movie that will take the viewer to Russia in 1999 when things got rather heated between the Russian state and the Chechnyan separatists. Politkovskaya, who was with Novaya Gazeta at the time, was sent by the editor, Dmitry Muratov (Ciarán Hinds), to the front line. Her task was not to be a war correspondent but a "the peoples' reporter," digging his story from the view of the ordinary citizen. Despite the fact that the war the Russians were fighting was not only against the rebels but also a massacre camouflaged with propaganda, she kept on with her exploration. Her fearless truth-telling put her and her family in great danger, including her husband, Alexander Politkovsky (Jason Isaacs), along with their children.
James Strong (Broadchurch, Doctor Who) directed it with a screenplay done by Eric Poppen (Borderland). The all-star ensemble of the movie Words of War includes Ellie Bamber, Harry Lawtey, Naomi Battrick, Ben Miles, and Tady Elsayed. This production was attributed to Miriam Segal, Mark Maxey, Paul Brennan, and Kia Jam, with also the involvement of well-known professionals like Sean Penn and Eric Swalwell as the executive producers.
Receiving positive responses from both the press and the intelligence community, the movie is impressively valid. Bob Woodward, the veteran journalist of The Washington Post, admitted that "I think it's a not only strong movie, but also it is very revealing the truth that the totalitarian regime silenced the press with violence." On the other hand, the former CIA director, John Brennan, reiterated that "Without a free and independent media, the world is swinging even more unjustly as it is powerfully depicted in this movie."
Words of War bring us the image of a courageous journalist willing to put his life in danger in order to unveil the government's lies. By its art, the work is meant to serve as a reflection on the importance of press freedom which is threatened by democracy.
