The Alto Knights: Is Robert De Niro's return to the Mafia genre, success or failure?

Info in Movie News | After succes of violent gangster comedy, Dirty Grandpa, Robert De Niro is reteaming with the mob universe for The Alto Knights, but the movie has not received the anticipated appreciation from critics.

Directed by Barry Levinson, it stars De Niro as the two legendary reputed mafia bosses, Frank Costello and Vito Genovese. The movie tells the true story of Genovese's attempt to murder Costello, who sought to oust him and take over organized crime world. With De Niro's proven track record in the mafia genre, the expectations for the movie would be definitely high.

One of the main attractions of the The Alto Knights is the choice of De Niro to play dual roles. In an interview, the actor explained that Costello and Genovese are two completely opposite kinds of people, where one of them is a rational and diplomatic, while the other is much aggressive and impulsive. However, not all critics agree that a double role was necessary. According to Collider appendices, the main critique of this decison was that there was no clear thematic weight in the placement, so it was more of a gimmick than an artistic decision. Some judge that there would have been a lot of other actors who could play one of the charactesr and that is why, they thought the decision was necessary in the plot.

The Alto Knights got a fine reception from the critics. Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a score of 38%, while Metacritic came up with a rating of 47/100, which implies a mixed bag of reception. Opinions from the Collider are whether the double De Niro character was really a value addition to the movie or if it just distracted from the point of story. But it is still a classic presentation of Mafia storytelling with fierce competition and intrigues that infest the underworld.

De Niro was joined with the very talented actors such as Debra Messing as Bobbie Costello, Cosmo Jarvis as Vincent Gigante, and Kathrine Narducci as Anna Genovese in this movie. The presence of the supporting actors deepens the story, especially when it comes to the description of the characters' relationships and their world of organized crime. Nevertheless, the secondary characters' performances may not seem to be entirely sufficient for the critics to rate the movie at the highest level.

With the various reviews, the decision is finally with the audience. Will The Alto Knights find a place in the hearts of the mafia movie fans, or become one of De Niro's forgotten projects? This movie was released in cinemas on the 21st of March, and time will show if the double role experiment will be a success or not.
