Doctor Strange's Benedict Cumberbatch Will Assemble in Secret War, Not in Doomday

Info in Movie News | Benedict Cumberbatch on His Future as Doctor Strange in the MCU His latest outing in the role was in 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

The good news is that he is again expected to reprise his role for “Avengers: Secret Wars,” currently in pre-production and slated for release in 2027. In a January 22 interview with Variety, Cumberbatch suggested his character is integral to where the MCU story will go. “He’s [Dr. Strange] very much involved in what happens with the story,” Cumberbatch said.

Also, Cumberbatch has confirmed that he will be making a standalone Doctor Strange film, but would not divulge any details.

As for the future, Cumberbatch revealed that he will be taking some time off from the MCU next year, since Doctor Strange won't appear in "Avengers: Doomsday," which is due out in 2026. He said that his character’s storyline does not fit with the story of this film.

“Avengers: Doomsday” will include some original MCU characters, all with new roles, as Robert Downey Jr. appears set to be the new Doctor Doom, and Chris Evans will return in an unspecified role. The film also features the Fantastic Four, and will also feature folks like Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

As far as direction goes, the Russo Brothers (Joe and Anthony Russo) are confirmed to direct both “Avengers: Doomsday,” as well as “Avengers: Secret Wars”.

We don’t know of any other Doctor Strange projects beyond “Avengers: Secret Wars,” at least not yet. Cumberbatch has portrayed Stephen Strange since the release of the first “Doctor Strange” in 2016, and has appeared in “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021) and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (2022).
