Info in Movie News | Netflix’s hit action franchise, Extraction, is getting bigger than ever, as the streamer officially expands the universe through two major projects currently in development. Next in line is Netflix with an ambitious plan to extend story of Tyler Rake, a series of two action-packed hit movies featuring Chris Hemsworth in the lead role, not only by launching a spin-off series but also by an international movie going to entirely new places. Besides the rapidly-filing-up Extraction 3, which will be shooting very soon, the franchise will also feature a Korean spin-off movie named Extraction: Taigo, as well as a fresh series starring Omar Sy. Both are set to bring in new characters and fresh plots along with sticking to the originals' resolute and fiery nature.
According to Movieweb, Omar Sy, who is best recognized for his roles in Lupin, and The Killer, will be the lead character in the forthcoming series. The protagonist is a mercenary who gets trapped in a hazardous mission to save hostages in Libya. The project of the Russos, who also did the first two movies, is expected to be a deep dive into the emotional and psychological experience of its characters. Whatever the case may be, the storyline is going to showcase the human side amidst the terrible war, which eventually will break down to the main themes of the trauma, loyalty, and moral ambiguity. Netflix has confirmed that the serial will be of eight episodes with Glen Mazzara being the showrunner. The announcement of the addition of Boyd Holbrook (Logan) and Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) to the cast makes the cast line-up more and more brilliant. Although the streamer hasn't set a precise release date yet, it is said that the production will start around the end of this year. Fans will be served with the Extraction-driven universe with a global reach and narrative depth, which is more about the characters than the action.
Additionally, Netflix plans a Korean spin-off titled Extraction: Taigo, featuring Ma Dong-seok, who is also known as Don Lee and had global hits such as Train to Busan, The Roundup, and Marvel’s Eternals, as its lead. With this project, Netflix takes a daring step in the direction of Asia for the world of Extraction and at the same time merges a Hollywood-style spectacle with the Korean cinema’s power and depth. According to the info given by What’s on Netflix and Collider, the movie will see Lee Sang-yong who directed The Outlaws 2 teaming up with writer Cha Woo-jin. In the movie, Extraction: Taigo, Ma Dong-seok plays the role of a mercenary who is compelled to go to the perilous area for saving the kidnapped comrade by force. The one who injected the energy into the story and gave him support was Lee Jin-wook.
Production for Extraction: Taigo is planning to start around the middle of October 2025, immediately after Chuseok holiday in Korea (October 5–8), and will probably be done by the middle of January 2026. The movie is put together by Big Punch Pictures, B&C, and Nova Film and the main shooting will be done in various places of South Korea.
Though there is no official announcement of the release date yet, the mixture of Ma Dong-seok’s crude physicality and Lee Sang-yong’s energetic directing style has already been talked about a lot by the fans of action movies. Ma, who is famous for his bone-crunching fight scenes and great screen presence, involvement assures a movie that will not only be full of the fiery side of the genre but also will have some heart.
Unlike the main Extraction movies led by Hemsworth, Extraction: Taigo is reportedly being designed as a standalone story that doesn’t directly connect to Tyler Rake’s timeline. The producers want each project to have its own identity so there is no plan for Chris Hemsworth to be seen even in a cameo. Anyway, the core theme is always the same - bravery, sacrifice, and human nature under the harsh side of the war. By adding a new country, language, and culture, Netflix is turning Extraction into its first real worldwide action universe just like John Wick did with his expanding world of assassins.
On the other hand, Chris Hemsworth is still very capable for quite a few more years and, thirdly, as per a recent statement by director Sam Hargrave, the next chapter of the story of the Extraction trilogy is going to shoot in 2026. The release date is initially planned for 2027 and it will be a Hemsworth's schedule for the Avengers projects availability condition. With three different storylines now existing, the main trilogy of Hemsworth, the TV series by Omar Sy and the Korean spin-off by Ma Dong-seok, Netflix is definitely setting the stage for Extraction as its main global action brand. They delve into different facets of the same universe, the brand, proving that people everywhere still want relatable, high-energy, emotional stories.
In several aspects, Extraction is turning into Netflix's equivalent of Marvel and Fast & Furious movie universes. Instead of focusing only on spectacle, the franchise is changing through the stories that show the people behind the explosions.
