According to tvguide.or.jp, Revenge Spy follows Yuga Sugawara, a man who secretly infiltrates the IT company Imuta Medical Data. His goal is simple yet dangerous, to uncover the truth behind the death of his older brother, Naoyuki Sugawara, which was ruled a suicide but which Yuga suspects was connected to corporate foul play. At work, Yuga gives the impression of being a cheerful and approachable person, however, beneath the outer layer, he is a determined spy with a personal vendetta. It all gets overhauled when he meets Hana Imuta, the company president's daughter, who initially is just another target but soon turns into someone he really loves.
The hook of the drama lies in the fact that the plot of the revenge is not the only thing that has appeal but also the gradual emotional change of the main characters. Yuga and Hana’s relationship is being formed by caltural moments, starting from the office, and the times they are sharing their secrets and learning from each other. This slow-burning romance gives the drama another dimensions because the feelings for love and loyalty to his mission can’t help but clash.
Revenge Spy is a ten-episode drama, where the script is by Yuko Matsuda and Hajime Takezono is directing. Both are experienced in integrating romance, comedy, and mystery smoothly. The well-executed cinematography of the drama and the contemporary Japanese images that accompany each scene makes it visually exciting all throughout, while its energetic tempo keeps the tension high.
Yuga is portrayed by Kazuya Ohashi, who is a charming yet emotional actor. He represents the side of the character that is loved by the public and his own deep pain which is what causes his mission. Nagisa Shibuya’s character of Hana Imuta holds the same power and depth, she is a very intelligent and elegant woman whose feelings change in a noticeably delicate way. The actors, including Mitsuomi Takahashi (Sho Sakurakoji), Nao Oriyama (Shinnosuke Okayama), and Muga Tsukaji (Kojiro Okayama) who play the supporting characters inject new elements to the story with the well-thought-out side plots that they create.
Tonight’s episode marks the beginning of the second half of the series. Yuga, who is now formally Hana’s boyfriend for a limited time, seems to be somewhat unravelling the emotional barriers between them. A very small but certainly significant sign, deciding to give an orca sticker to Hana, has apparently been interpreted by her as a step closer to a relationship, but his innermost intention is still unknown. At that time, worries were growing because, when Shinnosuke’s father, Kojiro Okayama, was seen acting unusually, it appeared that he may have been leading Yuga farther from, not closer to, the truth about Naoyuki’s death.
Since its July 5, 2025 debut, Revenge Spy has been garnering tremendous social media buzz in Japan. Supporters laud the show for its impeccable blend of suspense and charming love-theme, pointing out that the emotional challenges seem to be as exciting as the spy mission. It has been speculated that Yuga would find a method to co-exist with Hana and at the same time, still be on his quest for the truth and the question is if the ending will be love, fairness, or a hard choice.
Each ep of this drama, which has a length of about 30 minutes, shoots a brick without a mortar, providing solid storytelling while not rushing the characters’ development. The pacing enables the audience to emotionally engage with the main characters but still intrigues them with the revelations coming later.
Revenge Spy is a show with a slow-burn romance, mystery, and spy elements, and if you are a fan of these genres, you ought to watch it this season. The show definitely has elements of a spy thriller, but it also focuses on the themes of trust, betrayal, and how love can come to you unexpectedly, even when you are involved in a dangerous mission.
