Info in Movie News | Park Min Young is stepping into a bold new role in the upcoming Korean drama Confidence Queen, where she trades in romantic leads for the thrilling life of a high-class con artist. Set to premiere on September 6 at 9:10 p.m. KST via Coupang Play, the series also marks Korea’s first Amazon original production, making it a highly anticipated crossover between Korean drama and global streaming.
According to Soompi, Confidence Queen is a Korean adaptation of the 2018 Japanese comedy-drama The Confidence Man JP, and it centers on three con artists with extraordinary talents. Their goal? Just to execute complicated tricks to take from corrupt people without depending on one particular profession. The leader of the group, Park Min Young, is Yoon Yi Rang, a genius swindler with an IQ of 165 and a mind in the top one percent of intelligence.
Yoon Yi Rang is such a character that her quirky world view, razor logic, and emotionally detached charisma are the main features of her character. This character is a new and interesting change for Park Min Young, who is mainly known for romantic comedies. She is now playing a more complex and intellectually stimulating role that is one half charming, one half deceitful and with a bit of a rebellious streak.
Joining her are two strong co-stars, Park Hee Soon plays James, a veteran con artist known for his quick wit and versatility. The leader of the gang stills is a wry joker who also has a leadership role in the group. He acts as the group's grounding force. Joo Jong Hyuk, on the other hand, takes over as Myung Gu Ho, the youngest one in the trio. His naive nature and loyal character give a light-hearted and lovable vibe to the team dynamic.
Besides the main actors, there will also be special guests like Song Ji Hyo and Lee Yi Kyung in this drama. The Star of Running Man fame, who has just appeared in Sh**ting Stars for one episode in 2022, returns to the screen here and thus, the series gets added star power and increased curiosity. Lee Yi Kyung, who was also there with Park Min Young in Marry My Husband, is expected to be the one having the most fun while doing a cameo in the new series.
The team behind Confidence Queen, which is the next project for director Nam Ki Hoon, is the same team that worked on Big Bet, Voice 3, and Kiss Sixth Sense. Nam Ki Hoon is the person who is in charge of this project and he is also the one who authored the four mentioned above. Nam Ki Hoon is collaborating with the writer of Hong Seung Hyun, who has also worked on Criminal Minds and Cheo Yong, to create this project.
Park Min Young recently gave fans a sneak peek of her character via Instagram, posting pictures of herself wearing a navy and yellow flight attendant outfit, which was one of Yoon Yi Rang’s many disguises. The caption “I will serve you with all my heart,” definitely fit well with the showcasing of her transformation skills and the teasing of the drama’s stylish tone.
Confidence Queen blends humor, suspense, and high-stakes drama into a slick con-artist tale set against a backdrop of social satire. It's not only the tricks that matter, they are also fighting against the evil characters by defeating them one scam after another. A star-studded cast, clever writing and stylish signature moments, this is the one drama that still makes its fans laugh after the first con.
