Info in Movie News | After years exploring Pandora through the Avatar franchise, James Cameron is diving into something very different, a brutal and bold new fantasy world. The legendary filmmaker just revealed that he’s developing a feature adaptation of Joe Abercrombie’s latest novel, The Devils, through his production company Lightstorm. Even more exciting, Cameron is co-writing the script with Abercrombie himself.
According to Collider, this marks a rare and highly anticipated creative pivot for Cameron, who hasn’t directed a non-Avatar movie since Titanic in 1997. Meanwhile, The Devils is fresh off its release on May 6, already hitting #1 on The Sunday Times Bestseller list in the UK and cracking the top 5 on the New York Times list. Cameron described the book as a “raw, hilarious, and ferociously intelligent ride” through a magical but morally gray version of Europe.
While plot details for the movie are still under wraps, the novel centers on Darque, a former royal executioner turned fugitive. He’s forced to join a band of oddball outcasts to face an ancient threat that could bring about a new dark age. In true Abercrombie fashion, the tone blends grim violence, sharp wit, and unforgettable characters, which sounds like exactly the kind of story Cameron loves to bring to life.
This isn’t just a new project for Cameron, it’s a shift in genre. With a deep background in sci-fi (The Terminator, Aliens, Avatar), Cameron stepping into fantasy, especially one this twisted and character-driven, is a major development. Fans of dark fantasy who also love cinematic world-building may find a perfect crossover here.
Meanwhile, Avatar 3: Fire and Ash is still on track for release this December 19. The movie picks up after the tragic death of Jake and Neytiri’s son, Neyteyam, and teases the return of Stephen Lang’s Quaritch. But this time, the tone appears to be much darker than the vibrant, awe-inspiring Pandora we’ve seen before. Early materials hint at a more dangerous and mysterious side of the alien world.
Though very different in scope and style, both projects show Cameron’s ongoing fascination with big themes and emotionally grounded characters in extreme worlds. And with Abercrombie’s storytelling known for its grit and nuance, The Devils could become the next major fantasy adaptation to watch.
No casting news or production timelines have been announced yet, but with both Cameron and Abercrombie involved in the screenplay, expectations are already sky high. Stay tuned, The Devils may just become the next epic saga to rule theaters.
