Dwayne Johnson to Star in A24’s Thriller Series Breakthrough as Dark Guru

Info in Movie News | Throughout a time you've been picturing him as a hero, a positive person fit for all types of viewers Dwayne Johnson took a turn in his career. The former pro-wrestler, who first appeared in movies like The Mummy Returns and classic shows like That ‘70s Show and Star Trek: Voyager, is now ready to shake up his image, and fans are more than ready to see it happen.

According to Collider, Johnson has been cast in Breakthrough, a new psychological thriller series from acclaimed indie studio A24. The story is about a young man who got involved with a very charming yet morally questionable motivational speaker. Dwayne Johnson will play the role of the guru that may even be one of the stars most intense and layered acting parts of his life.

This is set in Southern California during the early 2000s, shortly after the Y2K scare is over, and it delves into the experiences of individuals who are trying to find their identities and purpose in such uncertain times. The guru is of the type who could be considered as the personification of an inspiration and manipulation dichotomy; he is the one who lures those who are in the weakest moments into the darkest side of a self-help movement. On the other hand, the main character of Johnson is the source of the show’s energy, a personality so charismatic that even his darker side is hidden under his charm.

As told in Zeke Goodman’s words, an actor turned creator who was a part of Amazon’s I Know What You Did Last Summer and Cruel Intentions reboots, the script is a work of art. Breakthrough is the first time Goodman is writing for a major original series, and his association with A24 gives a high level of personal artistic ambition.

This project also marks a reunion between Johnson and A24. They are collaborating a film called The Smashing Machine, the new biographical drama of Mark Kerr's life, directed and written by Benny Safdie which is the same person who did Uncut Gems. Working with them on the movie was Emily Blunt, and the movie would be coming out on October 3.

On his social media, Johnson expressed his excitement about Breakthrough, calling it the kind of challenge he’s been “hungry and grateful” for. He described the story as a “deep, dark psychological dive” into the world of motivational gurus and their influence over those seeking purpose, saying it’s a role he wants to “try to unhinge, and perhaps rip open.”

No additional casting or directing announcements have been made yet, but with A24’s reputation, Johnson’s new direction, and Goodman’s fresh voice behind the script, Breakthrough already promises to be one of the most intriguing series to watch. This might just be Johnson’s most transformative performance to date.
