Info in Movie News | Marvel Studios' and Disney's new movie, Thunderbolts, fought its way to the top of the UK and Ireland box office, with a fantastic opening weekend of £5.9 million or approximately $7.9 million. The movie was not solely dependent on the reputation of the Marvel brand, but it used a more sinister tone, complicated internal conflict, and antiheroes who have been seldom highlighted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to attract the audience.
According to Variety, Thunderbolts brings together a ragtag team of “leftover” characters from previous Marvel movies. One of the characters that are brought into the movie is Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, who shows more of her character from her appearance in black Widow and Hawkeye. Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), the next member of the group, still fighting his past as HYDRA’s programmed killer, joins. The members left to the audience include Red Guardian, Ghost, and U.S. Agent (David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell, respectively). Disputably, they are together for a mission that, apart from being literally dangerous, is also ethically quite unclear.
Featuring a unique combination of spy-thriller and psychological drama, Thunderbolts helps in recharging the superhero genre by breaking away from the typical good-guys-versus-baddies formula. The viewers, on the one hand, are taken into the more personal world of the superheroes only briefly mentioned in the MCU through the characters' inner challenges and moral inconsistencies.
While the battle is on for critics, the overwhelming majority are showing admiration for Marvel's courage to take creative risks and switch into a gloomier atmosphere and serious subjects. The lines that appeal to the pain and the mistake of each character have had a strong impact on the audience, while acting enchanted. Yelena and Bucky’s connection, in particular, has gone viral on social media.
Thunderbolts, which is directed by Jake Schreier (Paper Towns, Robot & Frank) and written by Eric Pearson (Black Widow), focuses more on the characters than most of the previous works under Marvel’s umbrella. In his latest move, Marvel has decided to drive Schreier, who usually does movies on the small scale with more profound thoughts, as the flag-bearer of its new direction in storytelling innovation.
Thunderbolts Rebrands as the New Avengers
Unexpectedly, Marvel rebranded the Thunderbolts as the New Avengers after the movie was released. In an unexpected and cool turn of events, Marvel has decided to rebranding the Thunderbolts to the New Avengers upon the movie's release. This is not just a simple name change but also a complete change in the unit's significance within the MCU. The transformation from a group of involuntary anti-heroes compelled into action to a legitimate guiding force hitherto blessed by Earth's Mightiest Heroes is rather dizzying. It is obvious that the rebranding phase is one of the movie's most emotional rewards, receiving cheers from those who have been fans of the Avengers for a long time.
Back in the pages of Marvel Comics, the Thunderbolts did not always get along with the Avengers. Baron Zemo well led the team through his brilliant plan to pose as heroes while he was in fact misleading the world on hidden intentions and thus was one of the most iconic story arcs, if not the most, thunderously giving investment to his/her characters to the fullest extent, inhibited by no condition. Tensions have also burst when the truth came out. This happened in a very large confrontation with the Avengers. The story was a deep exploration of issues such as identity, trust, and the public opinion swayable by illusion.
In a different scene, Thunderbolts made their brief appearance where the said characters were in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. These characters initially pretended to be friends and then revealed their real motives. In the story, the team descends into infighting that added emotional depth, sometimes the combatants turned against their own to fight with the Avengers, leaving a strict moral choice that's just Marvel's style.
As it is not officially announced, we cannot be sure if these comic and animated series will change the MCU's future, although the thematic area is set. New Avengers (a.k.a Thunderbolts) might be the next to face Sam Wilson's Avengers and hence the theory our team at Infoinmovie (one of our writers who's been in touch with Marvel comic and cartoon since childhood) believes could influence the future MCU phases emerges.
The way Marvel adapts its fascinating resource stands out as the Studio takes the source material and reimagines it to make more complex, adult-themed stories. Thunderbolts is not just a regeneration of familiar characters but it's a way to the bolder road of the Avengers future, a road full of new heroes, new challenges, and a whole heap of moral gray areas.
Post-Credits: A Fantastic Reveal
If that weren’t enough, the post-credit scene throws open the doors to an entirely new frontier in the MCU. Viewers are shown a mysterious spacecraft emblazoned with a glowing “4”, a clear nod to the Fantastic Four. This scene marks the official tease of Marvel’s First Family entering the cinematic universe.
This moment is a big thing, think about it! The New Avengers and Fantastic Four could meet head-on real soon, if not as colleagues, then as rivals. The probability of that happening is very high with all the suggestions of interdimensional wars and cosmic threats. Fans went wild in theaters, finally getting a glimpse of what could become the next great crossover event.
And yes, you won’t have to wait too long. Fantastic Four: First Step has already been set for a July release, which is sure to bring not only more revelations but also probably more links to the New Avengers storyline.
Box Office & Beyond
Back in the UK box office, Warner Bros.’ Sinners held strong at No. 2 in its third weekend with $2.5 million (bringing its total to $14.1 million), while Minecraft Movie kept its momentum in third place with a towering $71.1 million total haul. But it was undoubtedly the Thunderbolts which was in the limelight at that time showing its capability in a crowded summer launch schedule.
The thunderous roar of the movie, the cool characters' development, and a post-credit scene that teases viewers about the MCU's upcoming phase, Thunderbolts, as in New Avengers, have pretty much nailed the job of broadening Marvel's universe. The story is more intense, the mood is grimmer, and the friction between the superheroes is definitely leading to a staff that will be even more thrilled to meet the Avengers: Doomsday in 2026.
