Rian Johnson May Continue Knives Out Series, if the Story Feels Exciting

Info in Movie News | Rian Johnson is bringing detective Benoit Blanc back for another mystery in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, set to release later this year. With a cast full of major names like Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Glenn Close, and Andrew Scott, the movie promises something bold and different. But fans are wondering, could this be the last we see of Blanc?

According to Comicbook, Johnson isn’t closing the door on future Knives Out movies. The key, he says, is having both Daniel Craig on board and a story that truly challenges them. “As long as Daniel still wants to do it and we have an idea that feels thrilling and daring, like ‘Can we even pull this off?’ then I’m interested,” Johnson said.

He explained that the mystery genre is extremely flexible, allowing all kinds of storytelling. “Wake Up Dead Man is very different from Glass Onion. It’s like night and day,” he added. That creative freedom is what keeps Johnson inspired, though he admitted he’s ready to take a break and try something totally different next.

Knives Out made its memorable debut in 2019 with a very smart and witty murder mystery, in which the writer Harlan Thrombey's death played a crucial role. The movie has been well received by critical reviews and ticket buyers, prompting its Oscar nomination for the Best Original Screenplay. In 2022, Glass Onion set the story on a private island in the time of a pandemic when Blanc revealed another lethal attempt of a tycoon through technology.

The third entry, Wake Up Dead Man, remains tightly under wraps, but with a cast this big and Johnson promising a major tonal shift, expectations are high. The question now is what happens after this one.

Speaking with Collider, Johnson said there’s no rush for Knives Out 4, but he’s not ruling it out. “I’ve made three of these back to back. I’m not tired of them, but the next thing I want to write is something completely original in a different genre,” he said.

The good news is that Daniel Craig appears just as open to returning. In a chat with Variety, Craig said, “If Johnson keeps writing like that, then yes, I’ll keep playing him.”

That suggests the series isn’t ending, just taking a pause. With Johnson focusing on new projects and Craig being selective, fans may have to wait until 2029 or later for another Benoit Blanc mystery.

Still, the director’s approach is promising. He’s not in it for the cash grab. If there’s a new Knives Out, it’ll be because the idea is too good to ignore. And with Johnson’s track record for inventive storytelling, that’s something worth waiting for.

Until then, all eyes are on Wake Up Dead Man. It might be a turning point for the franchise or just the beginning of a new chapter. Either way, the future looks sharp.
