Info in Movie News |For those avid mystery fans out there, make sure you're ready, Disney+ is about to release the most mind-bending and action-packed K-drama thriller titled Nine Puzzles, a psychological mystery that features the profiler Kim Da Mi and the detective Son Suk Ku in a story that is full of trauma, suspicion, and mind games. The serial will start with the airing of six episodes on May 21, then continue with three on May 28 and finally complete with two on June 4.
According to Soompi, the series follows Yoon Yi Na, a brilliant but emotionally scarred criminal profiler who once witnessed, and possibly played a role in, her uncle’s unsolved murder ten years ago. Her path crosses again with detective Kim Han Saem when a string of new killings begins, each tied to a strange puzzle piece. The twist? Han Saem still believes Yi Na was involved in that first crime.
Kim Da Mi paints Yi Na as someone frozen in time, still haunted by the traumatic moment that defined her adolescence. In a teaser clip, Yi Na admits she remembers nothing from that day. That single line plants a seed of doubt, is she lying or just another victim of buried trauma?
Real-life criminal profiler Kim Yoon Hee, who consulted for the show, explains that memory loss following a traumatic experience is not uncommon. “Memories can resurface years later,” she says, lending credibility and depth to Yi Na’s story. The result is a character you don’t know whether to fear or feel sorry for.
On the other side of the mystery stands detective Kim Han Saem, played with intensity by Son Suk Ku. The murder case was his first assignment as a young officer and the fact that it remains unresolved has been a source of his many sleepless nights. Yet, still driven, obsessed, and at times reckless, Han Saem is very much determined to crack the case, even if he has to confront his own failures and biases.
The description of Han Saem by Director Yoon Jong Bin is that of a person who still runs when authority tries to stop him. That undivided focus and energy spent on the rights of individuals directly contradict Yi Na’s questionable past, which is being part of a partnership characterized mostly by distrust rather than trust.
What makes Nine Puzzles different is its deep insight into the psychological realms of the characters. It’s not only about identifying the killer, but the series goes further even to the extent of witnessing the emotional wreckage. The unspoken conflict between the two main characters clashes loudly when Han Saem flatly mocks Yoon Yi Na, saying, “Let me ask you again, did you kill him, Yoon Yi Na?
”Even though it is quite confronting visually and there are twists to the story, Nine Puzzles shares commonalities with shows like Stranger and Beyond Evil. Offering an engaging mystery plot and the presence of characters who have been emotionally hurt, the audience can expect that this series will be full of intelligence and excitement at the same time.
Make sure not to miss this one as it is likely to become your next Disney+ binge-worthy addiction.
