Batman Forever is a lively and high-spirited sequel to the Batman series, helmed by Joel Schumacher and overseen by Tim Burton. The movie, which saw its release in 1995, tells the story of the on-going inner conflict of Bruce Wayne and at the same time, it also unveils two of the biggest crooks and at the same time, two of the most exuberant ones in Gotham: Two-Face and The Riddler.
Plot Overview
In the city of Gotham, the situation becomes critical when the former Prosecutor turned thug, Two-Face, organizes a hostage situation in the bank during a robbery. Batman comes on the scene to rescue the victims just in time, but Two-Face flees leaving a mess and a lot of unanswered questions. By using the method of flashback, it is revealed to us that Two-Face used to be a respected lawyer by the name of Harvey Dent who was scarred with acid on his face during a courtroom incident. His mutilation resulted in a split personality that forced him to make life-and-death decisions by the toss of a coin.
Meanwhile, Edward Nygma, an eccentric inventor working for Wayne Enterprises, introduces Bruce Wayne to a device that beams television directly into the brain. When Bruce rejects the invention, citing ethical concerns, Edward spirals into madness. He killed his boss and made it look like a suicide and then he changed his personality to The Riddler, providing cryptic riddles for Bruce to solve.
Through the personal space of Bruce, Dr. Chase Meridian enters. She is a skilled criminal psychologist. In the process of having relationships with both Bruce and Batman, she confuses him about his ability to put behind the life of a vigilante.
At one of the circus performances, Two-Face disrupted the show by threatening people with a bomb and asking for Batman to uncover himself. Acrobat Dick Grayson, part of the Flying Graysons troupe, heroically prevents the explosion—but loses his family in the process. Bruce takes Dick in as his ward, but the young man soon discovers the Batcave and insists on joining Batman as Robin to seek justice for his family.
The Riddler and Two-Face form a deadly alliance, using stolen resources to mass-produce a mind-manipulating device known as The Box, which increases The Riddler’s intelligence by siphoning data from Gotham’s citizens. During a lavish party hosted by Nygma’s company, Batman is nearly killed, but is saved by Robin. After discovering Batman’s identity through the device, the villains destroy the Batcave and kidnap Chase.
Bruce, now determined to continue as Batman, teams up with Robin for a final confrontation on the villains’ island hideout. Robin chooses not to kill Two-Face, but is captured. Batman managed to come to a decision and in this way, he was able to save Robin. The situation was very difficult, as both characters were about to fall into death traps, but Batman was sure he had to do what he did. Through a clever riddle and an accurate shot, Batman neutralized the machine, rescued both hostages, and threw Two-Face as well as his coins into the air, which resulted in him dying as the coins fell.
The Riddler is later moved to Arkham Asylum after he is found to be delusional even to the point of thinking that he is not only the Riddler but also Batman. The movie ends with Batman and Robin dashing into the battle in high spirits and then they, as well as other defenders of Gotham gather in a row to guard the city."
