Star Wars: Starfighter to Break New Ground Beyond the Skywalker Legacy

Star Wars: Starfighter to Break New Ground Beyond the Skywalker Legacy

Info in Movie News | After decades of sequels and prequels rooted in Skywalker storyline, the Star Wars universe has now reached a point where it is going in an exciting new direction. Star Wars: Starfighter,  the newly announced entry in the beloved franchise, was formally unveiled at the Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Chiba, Japan. In the movie directed by Shawn Levy, known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine, and Ryan Gosling, who will play the leading role, a complete 180 will be seen since it is so different from fan expectations.

Instead of being a continuation or the explanation of the story, Starfighter will be an independent film, free from any iconic characters or common situations. Not only has it assured the audience of introducing an original storyline, but also it has promised new characters and the hidden mysterious universe. With Lucasfilm returning to the big screen in full force, this project looks to be a defining moment in a new era of galactic storytelling.

According to Collider, director Shawn Levy confirmed that Starfighter takes place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, making it the first movie to explore the post-Exegol timeline. “It feels like there’s a chance to make a movie that’s not a prequel, not a sequel, but still carries that Star Wars DNA we all love, with a brand-new adventure,” Levy said during a panel discussion. He emphasized the excitement of working within the universe but without being bound to its most familiar beats.

Ryan Gosling, set to play the lead role, echoed the director’s sentiment. Speaking to a thrilled crowd at Celebration, Gosling described the project as “filled with adventure, filled with heart, and original characters. It’s a chance to shine a light on a part of the galaxy we haven’t seen before. And there’s no one better to lead us there than Shawn.”

The script is being written by Jonathan Tropper, a frequent Levy collaborator whose credits include The Adam Project and This Is Where I Leave You. In an interview with Collider, Tropper called the experience “surreal,” explaining that working on a Star Wars movie had been a lifelong dream. “We’re still working on it,” he said. “For various reasons, I can’t say anything about it. But we’re working on it.”

While the exact plot remains tightly under wraps, the title itself gives fans something to speculate on. It could be guessed that Starfighter is one movie that will be about pilots, spacecraft, and battles in space, elements that have thrilled audiences since Luke Skywalker first took the controls of an X-Wing in 1977. The story in which the main characters are starfighters imply various dramatic scenes, action, camaraderie, and strategic warfare, unmoored from the larger Jedi-Sith conflict.

The movie is slated for release on May 27, 2027, and stands as a cornerstone in Lucasfilm’s cinematic revival. It will follow the May 2026 debut of The Mandalorian and Grogu, and arrive alongside other high-profile projects including James Mangold’s ancient Jedi tale and Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey.

Although Rogue One and Solo were also set in the past, Starfighter is not a prequel, is not a sequel and does not have any recurring characters, nor familiar storylines. No prior knowledge is necessary, it is a fresh start.

As Lucasfilm considers revamping its cinema reputation following a series of incidents, Starfighter seems to be the most appropriate project that can fan the embers of fans' enthusiasm once again. The movie has the power of creativity to bring a new experience to viewers while remaining on the same wavelength of the feelings, topics, and the thrill of the original movies.

What Levy and Gosling showed the audiences on stage is that they are the ones, who are guided by their love for the brand, to manage the project. “We’ve spent our lives in the audience,” Levy said. “We know how meaningful these stories are.” Gosling added, “Being here and seeing all of you is such a reminder of why we’re doing this. Movies matter. And these movies, this universe, it means something special. I think the Force is the fans. May the fans be with us.”

With the right mix of originality, emotional depth, and spectacular action, Star Wars: Starfighter could be exactly what the saga needs: a fresh jump to hyperspace that reminds us all why we fell in love with this galaxy in the first place.

Fans will finally get their chance to experience this new chapter when Starfighter hits theaters on May 27, 2027.
