The 61-year-old actor will headline Day Drinker, a dark thriller directed by Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) and produced by Lionsgate. The film, now in production in Tenerife, Spain, marks Depp’s return to big studio projects after focusing on European and independent cinema since 2018.
Day Drinker follows the story of a mysterious man (Depp) who crosses paths with a bartender (Madelyn Cline) aboard a private yacht. Their entanglement leads them into a dangerous underworld of crime and psychological tension. Penélope Cruz skillfully portrays the primary antagonist of the movie, which further intensifies the situation in the cast dominated by the Spanish actors Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, and Juan Diego Botto.
According to The Times, Day Drinker becomes Depp and Cruz’s one more joint film and the fourth in a series, being Blow (2001), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), and Murder on the Orient Express (2017) the previous ones. For Depp, he views the role not only as a personal challenge but also as a sign to Hollywood that he is making his comeback to the big screen.
This is Depp's most high-profile mainstream project since his legal victory in 2022, a lawsuit where he defeated Amber Heard in her charge of defaming him. This event made Depp shift to the indie field, where he is best known for his role in the French film Jeanne du Barry and his directorial effort, a biographical movie about the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani named Modi.

In 2024, Bruckheimer confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Disney is working on two different Pirates projects: a reboot with a new set of performers and a different story that could possibly keep the original saga going.
