Donnie Yen to Direct and Star in John Wick Spin-off, Caine

Info in Movie News | Great news for John Wick fans! Lionsgate has officially confirmed that Donnie Yen will direct and star in the upcoming spin-off focusing on his character, Caine. The movie is set to begin production later this year in Hong Kong. The rumor first surfaced earlier this year, but now it's official, as announced during Lionsgate’s panel at CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas.

According to Collider, the screenplay will be written by Mattson Tomlin, best known for his work on The Batman Part II. However, plot details and additional casting are still under wraps. Caine made his first appearance in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) as a blind assassin forced back into the game. This movie netted $440 million exclusively which was a real success.

As for the other news, Lionsgate said that John Wick 5 is a new project, and Keanu Reeves is to reprise his role while Chad Stahelski is to direct again. Reeves formerly indicated that he was retiring from movies due to his health, however, apparently, he has not yet decided to give up the character. On top of that, the creators also confirmed that an anime prequel movie from the John Wick universe is in the works.

For those who don’t know, Donnie Yen isn’t just a martial arts icon—he’s also an experienced director. He’s been behind the camera for seven movies, starting with Asian Cop: High Voltage (1994). His most recent directorial effort, The Prosecutor, is a legal drama with a thrilling action twist. Having such great knowledge of the action genre, there is no question that he will make Caine shine.

Be prepared for extra chic, action-packed mayhem—Donnie Yen is all set to elevate the John Wick world to the next higher level!
