Disney Hits Pause on Live-Action Tangled—What’s Going On?

Info in Movie News | Surprisingly, Disney has just announced a new but not quite that we have known a new project, it has been canceled this time. The live-action version of Tangled is on an indefinitel hiatus, it has not been confirmed yet as to whether it will be continued or revamped.

According to Collider, this decision comes right after Snow White’s underwhelming performance at the box office. With a budget of $270 million, the movie was able to reap in about the figures of $69 million in the U.S. and $145 million globally. What is more, the ratings got even worse as the movie was awarded a 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Given these numbers, it looks like Disney is rethinking its approach to live-action remakes.

The project was Tangled, which did not even reach the stage of full development with the presence of a director and a scriptwriter only. Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) was the director, and Jennifer Kaityn Robinson (Thor: Love and Thunder) was in charge of the script. Disney decided to stop here because it was never full steam ahead in production, and spending more resources should not be justified.

Nevertheless, Disney has not yet completely abandoned the idea of live-action movies. They are still working on Hercules, Robin Hood, The Aristocats, and Bambi in addition to Lilo & Stitch and Moana, for which they have already announced the release dates. The question of whether this is merely a temporary glitch or is it the beginning of a new strategy is still unanswered. The outcome of the new movies at the box office is the real test—if it turns out that audiences don't support the movies, just like Snow White, Disney might need to seek a new approach to the live-action adaptation.
