Betty Gilpin plays the role of Sara Holloway, an unyielding, clever woman, who is on a quest to distance herself from her former life of a fugitive, where she was accused of killing her abusive but wealthy husband in Philadelphia. Resolving the issue between Devin Rowell (Preston Mota) and his estranged father in Crook Springs, Utah who is also disabled, is what she is after. Devis are sensitive and smart children, who entirely comprehend their shortcomings but who are still managing to give their parents warmth during their difficult showups at the sight of a light.
Thus, Sara and Devin set off on their journey through the west with the help of guides and trade posts who helped them pass through the treacherous terrain. At Fort Bridger, they run into Jim Bridger (Shea Whigham), the smart, old hand, who is the original trader. With Vegemite being scarce and minutes running out, Sara's request for help brings her into the path of Isaac Reed (Taylor Kitsch), a quiet man from the mountains who was reared by the Shoshone Indians. Isaac is a guy of words, he has undergone trauma because of the separation of his wife and child and still in his head, he is consumed by the violent history of his past.
Their bond becomes apparent when a Mormon convoy after a long discussion with Sara decides to take Sara and Devin along with the res that include the conservative but agitated Jacob Pratt (Dane DeHaan) and his obedient wife, Abish Pratt (Saura Lightfoot-Leon). Along the way, Two Moons use her cleverness, bravery, and a sharp feeling of humanity to participate in getting Sara and Devin saved.
Meanwhile, a very serious player, the bounty hunter, Virgil Cutter (Jai Courtney), together with his team of assistants, and his younger, more cunning, Lucas Cutter (Andrew P. Logan), is hot on Sara’s trail for the bounty posted for her. They pursue the fugitives with relentless strength during a series of profound encounters and keep Sara, Isaac, and the crew on the edge of life or death.

As Young pulls in the reins of power and concludes agreements with the Breeder, who will concede Fort Bridger to the Mormons, he conducts along with drives to put down resistance and show Mexican dominance.
And, we know about the text of these stories again: full Abish Pratt, not so long a ago, a woman who inspired the faith of many, gets deeply troubled with what she experienced in the name of her faith, but she's still hanging in there. Jacob, her husband, complete confusion sidewalks onto the two of them as the declining Mormon militia takes with them a horrifying outcome.
Tension in the story escalates as a string of blood-spattered conflicts occur: Sara, Isaac, and their comrades had to deal with human antagonists as well as natural ones and the results of these arguments led to a full-scale war between the Mormon militia and the Shoshone fighters with no survivors on either side. The personal stakes skyrocket as Sara reveals the reason why she committed a crime — to protect Devin from her husband's abuse — and Isaac is still trying to deal with the sheer agony and sorrow over the loss of his family.
Sara and Devin do eventually get to Crook Springs, but not as the same people. Isaac dies saving her and Devin, placing him on an arc toward redemption. Devin’s fortitude and Two Moons’ loyalty are their hopes, Sara’s bravery and her ingenuity allowing her to navigate a cruel and unforgiving world.
