The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Expands Mario’s Cosmic Adventure in 2026

Info in Movie News | Super‍‌‍‍‌ Mario Galaxy Movie just released its first official trailer after a very long wait, giving fans a vivid idea of the most ambitious Mario project by Nintendo and Illumination made so far. After the worldwide success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), the sequel now takes Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach out of the Mushroom Kingdom and into space, where they will have to face new villains, explore new worlds, and see characters that have been with them for a long time but are making their debut in the movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel keeps following the three main characters, Mario (Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), as they embark on a space mission to save the universe after the events of the previous ‍‌‍‍‌movie. Bowser, still hilariously trapped in his miniature form after being shrunk at the end of the first movie, remains a chaotic presence. However, the true central threat comes from the arrival of Bowser Jr., now voiced by Benny Safdie, marking the character’s first major appearance in a theatrical Mario movie. Alongside him, fans finally get Rosalina, voiced by Academy Award winner Brie Larson, an iconic guardian figure from the Super Mario Galaxy video game series.

The‍‌‍‍‌ previous one, which was basically a fun origin story of the plumber brothers from Brooklyn, the new movie just massively expands the universe. We see Mario and Luigi dropping by Bowser's little castle in the first moments of the trailer, humorously antagonizing characters interaction being the highlight of the trio. But after that, it is shown that a large number of stars fall from the sky, an event that moves the whole gang to orbit to check out new worlds with different ‍‌‍‍‌habitats.

One of the moments to remember for the trailer is definitely the arrival of Rosalina. As the cosmos guardian and the mother of the Luma star kids, her coming is a sign of a deeper and more touching story, just like her role in the 2007 Super Mario Galaxy game. In the trailer, there is a clip of an intense fight where she, without any difficulty, breaks Megaleg, a huge three-legged machine that appears to be the most loyal friends of the long-term fans, is the one that most fans know. With her iconic wand and cosmic aura, she adds a dramatic magical dimension that expands the cinematic universe far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Bowser Jr. emerges with a redesigned look inspired by multiple Mario titles. With the Magic Paintbrush from Super Mario Sunshine and transformation energy reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, he becomes a major force capable of creating dangerous splotchy goop and amplifying his own power. His dynamic hints at a possible father son storyline with Bowser, who remains desperate to regain his full strength.

Directors‍‌‍‍‌ Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are once again in charge of the project, hence they are bringing back the colourful energy and the humorous tone which were the main features of the previous movie that made a billion-dollar success. Screenplay by Matthew Fogel is his return too, so he keeps the story going while opening up the new world for the narrative. Producers Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto are still in charge of the project, thus ensuring that the adaptation is in line with Nintendo’s original ‍‌‍‍‌idea.

The‍‌‍‍‌ trailer also reveals snippets of several references for the loyal fans of the series, such as motorbike scenes that evoke Super Mario Odyssey's Sand Kingdom, possible Casino Delfino references from Super Mario Sunshine, and the sounds that lead to speculation among the animation lovers. These decisions emphasize the Nintendo and Illumination pledge to interweaving the past with new storytelling to delight both the new audiences and the old fans.

The‍‌‍‍‌ sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie is under intense scrutiny after the movie made over $1.3 billion worldwide and is now ranked as one of the top-grossing animated movies of all time. It is obvious that Nintendo is staging this movie as a key element for a future bigger cinematic universe. Although Yoshi, the lovable character hinted at the end of the first movie, is not coming out of the new trailer, many can only think that the next sequels or spin offs will be generated by ‍‌‍‍‌this.

Scheduled for a release in the US on April 3, 2026, and a Japanese release on April 26, 2026, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie looks like it will be a bigger, bolder, and more imaginative adventure that takes the Mario universe beyond the limits of the known world. The movie, which is a great combination of wit, space drama, and finally fan-favorite characters joining forces, has all the creative and commercial potentials of surpassing its ‍‌‍‍‌predecessor.
