Info in Movie News | Following an intense seven-way bidding battle, Netflix has officially secured Trigger Point, an A24-produced action crime series that is propelling fast to become one of the most anticipated titles on the platform. This project has resulted in a very competitive bidding war which is reflective of the huge demand for thriller content of high quality, especially those that have major stars and strong creative teams in their corner.
According to Deadline, it was down to two companies, namely Netflix and Apple TV, in the final decision of the series go one way or the other with both companies offering to produce the series straight away. The deal was finally closed by Netflix, an event which is in line with the streamer's continuous efforts to extend its collection of gritty, character-driven stories that involve the action genre. The commitment is a strong indication of the project's potential not only from a creative standpoint but also from a commercial one.
Trigger Point is about Red at its core, a character played by Joel Edgerton, a former Tier One Special Forces operator who now runs the criminal underworld. Red is leading a group of ex-elite soldiers who are using their tactical skills for the benefit of the illicit clients they hire, while pretending to be a private military contracting firm which is their public front. Their operations are risky, accurate, and yield them a good profit, but their activities expose them to the wrath of an FBI agent who is adamant about putting an end to them. The clash resulting from this causes a very intense pursuit with lots of tactics, changing loyalties, and psychological struggles.
The concept of the story is by Harrison Query who also performs the roles of the writer and the showrunner. Query is recognized for his writing work in Amazon’s Heads of State movie and the soon-to-be-released true crime limited series, Unspeakable: The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey. His manner is characterized by the efficient combination of the realistic and drama aspects of the characters with the tension of the action, making him an appropriate showrunner guiding voice for a series built around elite operators and moral conflict.
The series is being helmed by Jeremy Saulnier whose previous credits include Rebel Ridge, Green Room, and Blue Ruin. Saulnier is celebrated for his skill to bring to life very real, raw, and moody thrillers, with the violent side of the story being shown in a very understated and tense way rather than in a grand spectacle. Considering his directing style, it would appear that 'Trigger Point' is going to be very much a gritty, tactically accurate, emotionally intense kind of story that would satisfy the fans of realistic military or crime thrillers."
On the production side, A24 continues expanding its television footprint. The studio recently secured another straight-to-series order for Discretion, a legal thriller starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning. Trigger Point is a production of Cut To’s Joe Hipps, who is widely recognized for his work on Ozark, House of Cards, and Counterpart, along with Patrick MacDonald and Katie Giarla. The presence of the trio in the project as creators and writers contributes to the quality of the storytelling and the artistic excellence of the movie.
Joel Edgerton’s casting adds significant star power. The actor is being showered with award-season recognition for his leading role in Clint Bentley's movie Train Dreams, which was first shown at Sundance and is now available on Netflix. Edgerton has been known to take on the characters which are emotionally complex and morally conflicted, such as those in The Gift, Boy Erased, Loving, The Great Gatsby, and Attack of the Clones. It is his depiction of Red that will probably focus on the character's inner turmoil, keen tactical intelligence, and the bitter price of a life dominated by violence.
While Netflix is yet to announce a premiere date for the show, it is anticipated that the production will go ahead without delay as a result of the fast and heated bidding process and the immediate decision to order the series. Thanks to its combination of riveting action, deep character drama, and high-caliber creative talent, Trigger Point is gaining momentum to be one of the major Netflix releases when it is out.
In case the show lives up to the expectation, Trigger Point would be able to add an exciting new dimension to Netflix's catalogue of realistic action thrillers and, in addition, be a further indication of A24's increasing influence in the field of prestige television. The audience will get to see a combination of tactical confrontations, psychological warfare, and nail-biting narratives involving warriors who are immensely potent yet humane at the same time.
