Johnny Depp Leads Ti West’s Gothic Reimagining of Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol

Info in Movie News | Johnny‍‌‍‍‌ Depp is making a big studio comeback and is almost done with the final negotiations to play the role of the Scrooge of the world in the gothic and supernatural reimagining of the classic Dickens holiday story entitled "Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol". The‍‌‍‍‌ movie which will be directed by Ti West who is known for his X, Pearl, and MaXXXine horror trilogy is Paramount Pictures' production. A release date of November 13, 2026, is what the studio is said to be aiming ‍‌‍‍‌for.

According to Variety, the movie would delve into the mental and eerie aspects of Scrooge's experience much more than the previous ‍‌‍‍‌one. Depp will be the one to represent the heartless entrepreneur whose avarice and sourness had made him one of the most infamous literary characters of the wicked in history. It‍‌‍‍‌ was a bitter Christmas Eve in London during the 1800s when Scrooge had to cope with three spirits, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come, who confront him with the life that he led and the fact that he was the one whom they had ‍‌‍‍‌become.

Dr. Nathaniel Halpern, the writer of the script and the main creative brain behind the works such as Tales From the Loop and Legion, is known for mixing the elements of science fiction, surrealism, and to the emotion. His work with Ti West is like a signal that this new A Christmas Carol is not going to be a simple standard but rather a daring combination of psychological drama and atmospheric horror. In fact, the director's skill in visualizing and his command of the buildup of suspense are likely to result in a chilling cinematic adaptation of Dickens’ timeless work.

Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie, Oblivion) is a part of the ensemble in a secret character whose identity is not revealed. There are already numerous suggestions that she might bebelle, Scrooge’s sweetheart that he lost, or maybe one of the ghosts showing the way to time. In the world of her acting, Riseborough is known to be a completely different person each time, and this fact alone is enough to attract the audience emotionally to this venture. The movie is in the hands of producer Emma Watts, while Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman are executive producing the ‍‌‍‍‌movie.

Depp’s‍‌‍‍‌ role as Scrooge is a major career milestone for him. Following the Beast: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) marvel, this is going to be his first big studio movie in a while. The‍‌‍‍‌ actor, who due to his series of public legal fights with ex-wife Amber Heard has been missing from major Hollywood productions for several years, has been gradually fixing his image through indie projects. Johnny‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Depp brought back his image with a French-language period movie, Jeanne du Barry, where he played the role of King Louis XV. The movie had its debut at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and was greeted with open arms by both the public and the ‍‌‍‍‌critics. After that, he decided to direct Modì: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, a biographical drama based on the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, scheduled to be released in theaters in the United States on November 7, ‍‌‍‍‌2025.

Paramount's move of pairing Depp with West looks like a well-thought-out play from both a business and artistic point of view. Considering how Depp has been such a troubled and eccentric energy figure type of characters like Captain Jack Sparrow, the Mad Hatter, Sweeney Todd, and Willy Wonka, it is no wonder that he would be chosen for Scrooge. On the other hand, West's increasingly acclaimed as a horror director who gets his audience gripped by the blend of dread, atmosphere, and human emotion could only mean one thing, a very different A Christmas Carol than we've ever seen. Instead of being a tale with the usual happy holidays, it looks like the story of Ebenezer will delve into the areas of isolation, guilt, and redemption through the darker, gothic style of the ‍‌‍‍‌genre.

The project arrives at a time when Hollywood is once again revisiting Dickens’ story. Warner‍‌‍‍‌ Bros is also working on its version. It‍‌‍‍‌ is being led by Robert Eggers, the director of Nosferatu, and they say that Willem Dafoe will be the one to portray ‍‌‍‍‌Scrooge. But, motivated by West’s dark visuals, Paramount’s reimaging intends to stay as a quiet and eerie ghost story elevated in tone that reflects both the tragic side and the bright of Scrooge’s change brought about by the supernatural.

For Johnny, the role might be just such a play as he will be able to write the next chapter of his career differently with this one. The buzz around Day Drinker, his upcoming partnership with Lionsgate in which Penélope Cruz is co-starring and Marc Webb is directing, is equally positive. In fact, these two projects together are like a manifesto of his deliberate return to complex, character-driven storytelling and away from blockbuster spectacle.

On top of that, initial reactions from the insiders of the industry indicate that the role of Ebenezer might lead to the “re-birth of Depp’s career” and at the same time offer him a part that parallels his own journey, a man grappling with the ghosts of his past but, eventually, obtaining salvation and a second chance. The attaching of Ti West’s name to the project is another factor that raises the bar enormously turning what ordinarily would have been a simple nostalgic Christmas movie into a visually striking and emotionally rich cinematic event.

Any of the recent takes on the Dickens classic that go down well, have the potential of being recorded in the annals of reimaginings that have the power to revive a timeless literary work, as in this case. It seems like Paramount is betting on its mixture of gothic horror, prestige storytelling, and a rejuvenated Johnny Depp to be the reason for the 2026 most-awaited releases of the ‍‌‍‍‌year.
