Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Reynolds Team Up for Netflix’s Eloise

Info in Movie News | One‍‌‍‍‌ of the most iconically mischievous and lovable children’s literary figures is coming back to life by Netflix in a brand-new live-action Eloise movie. The‍‌‍‍‌ film will be directed by and co-written with the Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. Besides that, Ryan Reynolds will produce the movie along with his production company Maximum ‍‌‍‍‌Effort. Moreover, Ryan Reynolds will play the bad guy as an entirely new character, a villainous twist in the charming Eloise world, which has been the fans' favorite for the last 70 years or ‍‌‍‍‌so.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story will serve as a wholly original adventure inspired by Kay Thompson’s Eloise books, which were illustrated by Hilary Knight. The story centers on a witty and curious six-year-old girl who lives on the “tippy-top floor” of New York City’s Plaza Hotel with her nanny, her pug named Weenie, and her turtle Skipperdee. Going‍‌‍‍‌ up star Mae Schenk will be the one to represent Eloise, really giving life to the smart and naughty nature which is the main trait of the character. It is a surprising twist for the actor, who is the least expected to be the villain in Deadpool, Free Guy, and The Adam Project, Reynolds’ new role as the villain.

This new Netflix movie is a re-imagining of a well-loved children’s classic that also intends to keep the funny side and the loving nature of the original story. Sherman-Palladino collaborated with Marks to write the script and also with Woolverton, who is famous for her scripts of Disney classics like Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. Along with Reynolds, producers are George Dewey, Ashley Fox, and Johnny Pariseau for Maximum Effort, while Molly Milstein is the executive ‍‌‍‍‌producer. Production is set to begin in November, starting in London before moving to New York City to capture the energy of The Plaza Hotel, the setting that has become synonymous with Eloise’s adventures.

Compared‍‌‍‍‌ to other children's books, this particular series of Eloise has been the most popular among American kids for a long time, even after its re-release in 1955. Kay‍‌‍‍‌ Thompson, the author, writer, singer, and actress, created a vibrant series of 5 books with artwork by Hilary Knight. The collection consists of five books: Eloise, Eloise in Paris, Eloise at Christmastime, Eloise in Moscow, and Eloise Takes a ‍‌‍‍‌Bath. Eloise is the insightful and self-destructive life of a young girl with a wild creative power of the mind, a character that came from Thompson's own whimsical side. To name just a few, Eloise was differently brought to life through the screen in the early 2000s by the two made-for-TV movies produced by Disney, Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime, featuring Sofia Vassilieva and Julie Andrews.

The small independent movie studio MRC took over the movie rights of Eloise in 2019 and will work with Netflix, Handmade Films, and the Thompson estate to produce the movie. In fact, the company is coordinating with Hilary Knight and the original publisher Simon & Schuster to make sure the movie is a faithful adaptation of the books' appeal. MRC Film Co-Presidents Jonathan Golfman and Brye Adler say in their statement that this movie has been a long-term project and they are committed to this idea of bringing Eloise, with her astuteness and naughtiness, which was the essence of the first books, to the public ‍‌‍‍‌globally.

Ryan‍‌‍‍‌ Reynolds' creative partnership with Netflix is extended by his next movie Eloise, after the successes of Red Notice and The Adam Project. This‍‌‍‍‌ equally mirrors Netflix's ongoing commitment to create clean and socially acceptable stories that different age groups can identify with. Hannah Minghella, head of Netflix Feature Animation and Family Films, shared her excitement about the return of the character everybody ‍‌‍‍‌adored. She mentioned that Eloise has attracted readers for many years and is still an important factor in the cultural imagination of New York. Minghella pointed out that it is a nice, funny, and heartfelt family movie, made possible by the warmth and humor of the two artists Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Reynolds, when they bring back this lively young heroine to life for a lovely, funny, and heartfelt celebr evident for families ‍‌‍‍‌everywhere.

This‍‌‍‍‌ new reworking, aside from being nostalgic, can actually introduce Eloise to a global audience in a different way. The sharp writing, emotional layers, and somewhat zany humor of Sherman-Palladino’s signature style are all very likely to revitalize the narrative, and it is certainly going to have a wide appeal because of Reynolds’ star power. Their joint effort might make Eloise one of the most awaited Netflix family releases, hence, Eloise, the little girl with the huge fan base that effortlessly crosses generational divides, will be known to kids all over the globe.

The Eloise movie, with its well-established literary background, a vibrant team of creatives, and a fresh storytelling style, is actually turning out to be a perfect combination of the timeless and the modern. Faithful or not to Kay Thompson’s original vision and characters, the audience will be coming back to The Plaza Hotel for another round of fun, laughter, and timeless charm soon, that is for ‍‌‍‍‌sure.
