Emma Stone Returns in Bugonia, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dark Sci-Fi Satire

Info in Movie News | Emma Stone is showing no signs of slowing down after a stellar run that recently earned her another Academy Award. After the enormous triumph of Poor Things, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2024, Stone has decided to take on a daring new character once more. This time she joins forces with acclaimed Greek movie maker Yorgos Lanthimos in Bugonia, a darkly satirical sci-fi movie that is already drawing heavy attention from critics and audiences alike. It also reunites her with Jesse Plemons, her co-star from Kinds of Kindness, but in a twist of fate, the two will now stand on opposite sides of the story.

According to Collider,  Emma Stone is the one to portray the character of Michelle, a strong and influential CEO, who is the backbone of the story. At first glance, she seems like a no-go, a scoundrel who is both adored and dreaded by those who report directly to her. Nevertheless, after some time, Teddy played by Plemons, starts to suspect that his superior may be not of this world. When convinced that Michelle is an extraterrestrial with evil plans to annihilate the Earth, Teddy along with his coworker Don, who is played by a newcomer Aidan Delbis, go scuttling under the radar, digging up clues and plotting to foil her and save the world.

Bugonia is a remake of Jang Joon-hwan's 2003 cult classic Save the Green Planet! in English. With his unique combination of dreamlike visuals and biting social critique, Lanthimos is anticipated to apply his hallmark style yet again. Collider shared an exclusive still from the movie, showing Teddy sitting quietly in his company break room, wearing a tattered baseball cap and orange vest, lost in thought. Behind him looms a framed portrait of Michelle, watching silently from the wall like an omnipresent force. The imagery perfectly captures the movie’s tension between authority and the working class, setting the stage for the strange story that follows.

Michelle represents a new frontier of complex and unusual characters for Emma Stone. Over the last decade, Stone has proven her capability to work in different characters. In fact, she changed from clever comedies such as Easy A to dramatic movies like La La Land, which won her a Grammy for the first time, and The Favourite, her first work with Lanthimos. Since then the pair has been very productive. The Favourite got great acclaim and Poor Things is a movie that undoubtedly presents Stone as one of the most fearless and inventive actresses of her generation. On top of that, she is constantly breaking her own limits and doing roles that are not only complex but also unsettling by embodying a character like Michelle.

Bugonia's narrative allows the movie to use both the elements of absurdist comedy and satire. Teddy and Don are just two workers who are trapped in their boring jobs at a pharmaceutical company and feel that they are invisible in a system that does not care about them. As Michelle being an alien becomes more and more real to them, it is at the same time a paranoid fantasy and a symbol of the gap between corporate elites and everyday employees In case she is a space alien, or she is just a human supervisor who has a lot of power, Stone makes sure the character is not ordinary, and through her, not only can we see charm but also threat.

Besides Stone and Plemons, the film also features Alicia Silverstone and comedian Stavros. The inclusion of Silverstone and Halkias not only energized the band from which the film draws but also attracted a different kind of audience. However, most of the focus is still on Stone, and it her performance as Michelle that is predicted to be the main factor of the movie's delirious, satirical, and dark comedic blend. Lanthimos's directing has both the critics and the fans excited and looking forward to this, particularly his previous partnership with Ston that has been very successful.

Stone’s career momentum is not limited to Bugonia. The actress is still making great brave choices as she ventures into different parts of Hollywood. She has not only kept up auteur-driven works but also done well with the more mainstream studio titles, thus demonstrating her versatility. At the moment, what they have planned for their upcoming collaborations is still under wraps, but it has been announced that next times they're working together, she will be with Lanthimos, thus, as a result, cozier is one of the most intriguing director-actor partnerships in modern-day movie.

Bugonia is a movie planned to be released in September 2025, so it would be very likely to be an awards season contender. With such a talented and accomplished creative team behind it, and a powerful cast, the movie is expected to turn out like The Favourite and Poor Things, i.e., a festival favorite and awards-worthy movie. Satirical science fiction, psychological tension, and subtle social criticism have become the elements of Lanthimos' best works, and Stonne's portrayal of Michelle probably will be the main attraction of the movie.

Emma Stone has got the public's acclaim with her courageous choices and contrarianism, and it seems that Bugonia is not going to be any different. It will be really entertaining and thought-provoking to watch how Stone takes either Michelle as an extraterrestrial genius or simply a heartless corporate executive. Indeed, Emma Stone continues to leverage her bold choices and the horizon of Bugonia only further rehearses that she is not only an A-list star of Hollywood but also one of the most daring performers.
