The Winning Try Premieres Strong as Yoon Kye Sang Returns in Sports Comedy

Info in Movie News | SBS new comedy sports drama The Winning Try made its debut on July 25 with a bang, scoring the highest ratings in its time slot and rapidly gaining popularity among viewers. The show, which combined touching underdog bits with side-splitting comedy, is the return of Yoon Kye Sang to SBS after 18 years, and he has got new energy on the screen with rising star Kim Yo Han.

According to Soompi, the pilot episode of The Winning Try went up to 4.1 percent average viewer rating across the country. It was not only the highest-rated program in the  time slot but also the highest-rated Friday miniseries of the night. For a drama that is about the mixture of the sports, the redemption, and the found-family themes all drenched in the comedy genre, that’s a very good opening.

However, the story of the show is about a rugby player named Joo Ga Ram played by Yoon Kye Sang, whose bonding with the sport was very successful but unfortunately it got cut short abruptly because of a doping scandal. After the years, the incident has been forgotten, he is given a chance of redemption not as a player but as the new coach of the rugby team at his old high school. The only problem? The team is ranked dead last in the country and seems on the verge of being disbanded.

Joo Ga Ram’s arrival isn’t exactly welcomed. In fact, faculty members like Vice Principal Sung Jong Man (Kim Min Sang) and shooting coach Jeon Nak Gyun (Lee Sung Wook) are visibly displeased, especially as they've been actively pushing for the end of the school’s struggling rugby program. Still, Ga Ram’s quirky charm, confident grin, and bold approach shake things up at Hanyang Physical Education High School in all the right ways.

On the team, Yoon Sung Joon is the captain and best player and is played by Kim Yo Han. Sung Joon has great athletic skills and good looks and at first seems like the team’s backbone. However, under the surface, he is breaking apart, his performance is fading, and after receiving cold treatment from both classmates and teachers, he has lost motivation. His mood starts to improve when he happens to meet Coach Joo, who not only gives him a hard time but also unexpectedly supports him.

In Episode 2, the show takes a comic turn as the rugby team decides to try out different sports. Sung Joon changes his rugby kit for a fencing costume and is surprisingly good at it. Fellow player Oh Young Kwang (Kim E Jun) is with him but his face is funny because he is scared so much. At the same time, So Myung Woo (Lee Su Chan) gives wrestling a try but he is soon overpowered and groaning. These kind and lively sequences add a bit of fun and make the team’s chemistry even more obvious.

Yoon Kye Sang’s interpretation of the strange coach has received positive feedback, with people citing his talent for comedic timing and his energetic personality. The friendship between his character and Kim Yo Han’s Sung Joon is expected to be one of the most attractive points of the series.

With the combination of comedy, love, and sport, The Winning Try has all the ingredients to be a happy journey for fans of Korean drama. On every Friday at 9:50 p.m. KST, new episodes are broadcast on SBS.
