Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon Soars, Sequel Set for 2027 Release

Info in Movie News | DreamWorks’ « How to Train Your Dragon » animated saga is the one that most people love, and now it has jump successfully to live-action. The new movie adaptation was released on 13 June 2025 and immediately it turned out to be one of the biggest box office surprises of the year, grossing over $597 million worldwide. Both fans and critics have been high in their praises for the movie’s emotional depth, beautiful visuals, and valid retelling of the story of Hiccup and Toothless’s adventure.

According to Polygon, Dean DeBlois, the director, at first hesitated to come back for a live-action remake as he was afraid it might lessen the impact of the original. Although, he conditionally accepted to direct the movie under the clause of having full creative control. DeBlois aimed to keep the core of the story intact and at the same time deepen it with realistic settings and characters. What we get is a version that is relatable but still magical and thus it is able to win over veteran fans as well as new ones.

The fact that the movie is going to be set on the island of Berk is no small task. The team used complicated rigger systems together with great wind machines and gimbals to create the feeling of dragon flying when they were performing. Mason Thames, the actor who played Hiccup, worked incredibly hard and trained extensively to be able to use only his left hand throughout the movie, even though he was a right-handed person because the character was only animated with one hand. CinemaBlend states that such scenes are energetic performances, but they represent the movie's core as they enable the actors and their dragon partners to form a more genuine bond.

Nico Parker plays Astrid, together with Thames. She gives the character a lot of power and at the same time makes it more approachable. The third of a trilogy of animated movies, Gerard Butler, playing as Stoick the Vast, does not only return as a voice actor for that movie but also for the live-action version. Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Ruth Codd, and Harry Trevaldwyn are also in the cast. They unite their energies, effectively harmonizing humor, heart, and heroism to refresh Berk and its characters.

With rave reviews and huge box office earnings, Universal was quick to confirm a follow-up. As reported by Discussing Film, the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 is officially slated for release on June 11, 2027. DeBlois will return as both writer and director, and is currently developing the script.  The follow-up is anticipated to not only feature new characters such as Valka and Eret, but also delve into more profound themes and richer world-building than the initial part.

This live-action marvel demonstrates that reinterpreting favorite stories does not have to be just about nostalgia, it can give a new cinematic experience that complements and deepens the original One Night with a Dragon (2025) is basically not a remaking, but rather a respectful raising of the franchise’s emotional scope. As fans look forward to the 2027 follow-up, the skies above Berk have never shined so brightly
