Josh Duhamel Returns in Ransom Canyon Season 2, Netflix Starts Production

Info in Movie News | Josh Duhamel may be dodging danger in his new tech-thriller Off the Grid, but it’s the wide open land of Texas that’s calling him back. The actor is gearing up to return as Staten Kirkland in Ransom Canyon, Netflix’s surprise neo-Western hit, which has officially been renewed for Season 2.

According to Forbes, Ransom Canyon made an impressive debut when it premiered on April 17, landing at No. 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched TV shows in the U.S. for the week of April 14,20. Globally, it ranked No. 2 with 7.2 million views and over 56 million hours watched. With that kind of reception, Netflix wasted no time, Season 2 was confirmed on June 24, with production set to kick off this September.

Ransom Canyon, was shot in the beautiful Texas Hill Country and is about a man named Staten Kirkland (Duhamel), a rough rancher who copes with a great loss. A heart-breaking accident took the life of his son Randall, a teenager and Staten, thus, started to put together the pieces of his life and regaining connection through a slow-burn romance with Quinn O'Grady (Minka Kelly) was the main storyline of the series. But love isn’t the only challenge, threats to his land and shocking truths about his son’s death begin to surface.

Duhamel spoke to Forbes from his cabin in Northern Minnesota, reflecting on why this series struck a chord with audiences. “It’s the simplicity of it. It’s an escape into a world that’s not so tied to technology,” he said. “It’s about family, legacy, love, friendship. And it’s beautifully shot.”

April Blair is the creator of the series which is also the adaptation of Jodi Thomas' novel. The series mixes the nostalgic style with the new emotional issues. Duhamel said, "It’s kind of like comfort food." “There’s nothing overly complicated. April writes a world that’s easily consumable and relatable. I think that’s what makes it work.”

Duhamel and Kelly are the lead actors of the ensemble in which Eoin Macken, Lizzy Greene, Jack Schumacher, Marianly Tejada, Garret Wareing, Andrew Liner, and James Brolin also perform. The show’s low-key acting and the strong connection to a certain area give it a feeling of a place where people actually live rather than just a location for producing.

The success of Season 1 took even Duhamel by surprise. “You stick around long enough in this industry and there are more losses than wins. But when something hits, it feels really good,” he said. Even though he is now promoting Off the Grid, in which he represents a genius scientist who is running away from his villainous employer, it is obvious that his affection for Ransom Canyon has not faded away.

Season 2 is supposed to take Staten’s emotional journey further but also delve deeper into the mystery of his son’s death besides introducing new challenges for the Kirkland ranch. However, no official release date has been given so far. Yet, shooting is expected to commence in autumn and it might be back on Netflix by 2026.

The complete package of 10 episodes of Ransom Canyon Season 1 is presently available on Netflix for streaming. Whether you're a fan of a heartfelt drama, the wilderness of America, or the stories about a new start, this series has been gradually gaining attention and it is definitely not done yet.
