Info in Movie News | A-1 Pictures, the studio that made Sword Art Online, has announced their new biggest anime work at Anime Expo 2025. Named Eisen Flügel, the new anime movie is a confluence of supersonic sky battles, fabled dragons and a gripping script by a popular anime writer. The movie was introduced during the studio’s 20th anniversary celebration, accompanied by a visually stunning teaser trailer that instantly caught fans’ attention.
According to Collider, Eisen Flügel follows the story of Karl Schnitz, a young jet pilot who dreams of ruling the skies. His flying obsession just gets even worse when he meets Kaiser Drache, a dragon that is said to be the fastest in the whole world. The air turns into a war zone as human innovation fights against the old power, and Karl is in a duel flight that is not only about abilities, but also about fate.
The movie is the work of Gen Urobuchi who is best known for his amazing work on Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Psycho-Pass, and Fate/Zero. Urobuchi wrote Eisen Flügel as a two-part light novel in 2009, illustrated by Higashiguchi Chūō. At Anime Expo, Urobuchi confirmed that the adaptation of this anime has been on the table for a period of 20 years, thus this is a very special moment for both fans and the team of creators.
Daizen Komatsuda who has participated in Such projects as Evangelion, Paranoia Agent, and Kill la Kill is the one who leads this project. Yukie Sugawara (Overlord, Sword Art Online) and Seiji Mizushima (Fullmetal Alchemist, Shaman King) are the ones who have made changes in essence and have come together to tell emotionally motivated and action-laden stories.
Though Eisen Flügel is still awaiting a definite release date, the short video clip has already caused excitement among the anime community. The images reveal soaring aerial perspectives, fierce jet versus dragon fights, and a mood that is a mixture of fantasy and military reality. This is a very new and novel combination of genres, which still manages to remain very much a source of inspiration for anime.
For example, the fans of the series Sword Art Online would probably easily recognize A-1 Pictures' animation style of top quality and also the studio’s history of involvement in complex and character driven stories. A-1 Pictures has demonstrated several times that it is capable of completing several large projects while still having the same creative vision with works like Fairy Tail, Blue Exorcist, and Kaguya-sama: Love Is War.
Indeed, Eisen Flügel may be the studio's most challenging venture at this stage yet. It is a perfect example of how Gen Urobuchi’s mind-intensive narration, the best animation, and an original environment can combine to create a title that is still nowhere to be found in the upcoming season of anime releases.
Be on the look-out for more updates on Eisen Flügel, which is a daring journey towards the skies from one of the most consistent and visionary anime studios in Japan.
