Titus Welliver Stars as Van Helsing in Abraham’s Boys, Crime Drama The Westies

Info in Movie News | Titus Welliver, known for his gritty role as detective Harry Bosch, is taking a dark and dramatic turn in Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story. The actor trades his LAPD badge for a crucifix and vampire lore in this upcoming gothic horror movie, playing none other than Abraham Van Helsing. But this isn’t your typical monster hunt, this time, the real terror lies within the family.

According to Collider,  Abraham's Boys thus far is helmed by Natasha Kermani (V/H/S/85) and the movie is also the writers work of Joe Hill, an acclaimed short story writer of 2009. The plot focuses on the folklore of Dracula as recounted to Van Helsings’ offspring, thus opening up the discussion of generational trauma in the story. The movie is based in the period of 1915. The tale is about Max (Judah Mackey) and Rudy Van Helsing (Brady Hepner), two siblings living under the strict, paranoid rule of their father. They find, as his conduct turns more and more bizarre, that they were given new secrets about his past and, consequently, the terrifying legacy which they were never to be allowed to have.

A new trailer definitely adds to the excitement as it is a mixture of a creepy domestic atmosphere and gothic horror. There were also short scenes of a decaying rural house, the mother delivering some mysterious warnings (Jocelin Donahue), and the dark bits which indicated that Dracula hadn’t moved on yet. Aurora Perrineau going to be a part of the cast, too, which means the story combining the horror and emotional coming-of-age thriller elements will be completed.

Nevertheless, Abraham’s Boys represents only a fraction of Welliver’s life which is getting more cramped after his time on Bosch. Following this, he will play a lead role in a period crime drama, The Westies from MGM+ alongside J.K. Simmons. The eight-episode series is set in 1980s New York and revolves around Glenn Keenan (Welliver), an NYPD officer with deep connections to an Irish-American gang. Instead of being loyal to one side, he ends up in the middle between the law and his criminal friends, and thus the difference between right and wrong becomes less and less clear.

Welliver will also reprise his signature role as Harry Bosch in Ballard, a new Prime Video spinoff featuring Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard. Introduced in the Bosch: Legacy series finale, Ballard now takes the lead as the head of the LAPD’s cold case division, with Bosch returning as her reluctant mentor.

Though a possible Equalizer spinoff featuring Welliver wasn’t picked up by CBS, that has only cleared his schedule for bigger, bolder projects.

The movie Abraham’s Boys will be released in cinemas on July 11, 2025. Combining the elements of emotional depth, the gothic horror genre, and a new interpretation of Dracula, the movie is yet another significant change of direction in Welliver’s career that is evolving.
