Just a few hours ago, the studio surprised fans at the Annecy Animation Festival with the reveal of Gatto, a brand-new original movie set to hit theaters in the summer of 2027.
According to Collider, the movie follows Nero, a black cat living in Venice, Italy, a place that’s anything but a dream for him. Directed by Luca’s Enrico Casarosa, and produced by Andrea Warren, Gatto is already shaping up to be a bold artistic leap and an emotional story that blends visual beauty with a character-driven narrative.
Nero definitely isn’t a cat with a charmed life. Venice might be like a masterpiece for tourists, but for a black cat who couldn’t swim, and was surrounded by superstition, it’s a very tough place. Nero is the cat that people fear and avoid because they think he is bad luck. So, he has no choice but to survive by going with the city’s underground feline society. In the end, he even owes a cat mob boss named Rocco some favors.
However, when Nero meets Maya, a street musician who also feels like an outsider in Venice, things totally change. Maya catches Nero and makes him a house cat, which at first is really annoying to him. But, gradually, Nero starts to feel that he is seen, understood, and loved.
Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer, Pete Docter, called Maya and Nero “the two black cats” of the movie. Basically, the two are lonely souls that try to live in a place where most of the people do not accept them. Their mutual understanding becomes the emotional centre of Gatto, and definitely, this movie will be the journey of identity, belonging, and trust.
What really makes Gatto unique however, is the visual direction. The Pixar crew is venturing into a painterly territory, which definitely fits the local colors and stories of Venice. The first visuals that were revealed during Annecy were like a hand-painted spray and new 3D animation from Pixar, they were amazing and never seen before from this studio.
Gatto definitely looks like a reborn of Luca in the spiritual way, but regarding art, it has decided to be more risky. It is no longer an animal story that is meant only to be cute; it is a movie that has deep feelings, good atmosphere, and can even show a new side of animation technology.
Street-level grit, emotional depth, and European charm are the key factors that favor Gatto to become Pixar's next brilliant work. This movie is like music, cats, and deep storytelling for those who love these things. It is the release that should be planned to be watched in the summer of 2027.
