Info in Movie News | Anime fans are always on the lookout for opportunities to have their favorite characters go one up on the big screen, and DanDaDan: Evil Eye is just that. The last movie based on the popular series has just finished its debut weekend in theaters across the States, and it's still soaring. The plot that merges paranormal mayhem with science fiction elements and peculiar characters, the DanDaDan world of larks is no longer getting smaller but instead, is expanding, getting weirder, and becoming more thrilling.
According to Collider, DanDaDan: Evil Eye made over $3 million during its debut weekend in the U.S., a huge jump from the franchise’s previous movie First Encounter, which made just a third of that. The charming result is indicative of the fact that the fanbase has increased exponentially since the first season of the anime was released mid-October last year. The fans have remained hungry for new content ever since, especially after Netflix announced DanDaDan as one of its most-watched non-English series for the latter part of 2024.
But the real pull here, the characters. Momo Ayase and Okarun (alias Ken Takakura) are the perfect example of a quirky innovative combination. She is a initiative girl with a strong sense of spirituality, and he is a withdrawn guy who loves the aliens, and together they are dealing with ghosts, curses, and everything else. In Evil Eye, the duo is journeying to a far village with their friend Jiji, who is being haunted by something darker than they have ever expected.
The movie actually tells the “Evil Eye” part of the manga, and it is full of high-tension fight scenes, hot spring troubles, and the kind of crazy supernatural incidents that are loved by DanDaDan fans. The escalation takes place immediately when Jiji gets possessed by the spirit of the vengeful, the only solution will be to fight if they want to be free, but the mysterious family that they want to face seems to have more secrets than answers.
Speaking to Collider, co-director Abel Gongora revealed the team tried some new tricks this time around. “We wanted to use 3D in a different way and mix it with traditional animation so it still fits the style. For example, Evil Eye’s transformation was really tricky, but we wanted it to look cool and a bit raw with some pencil-texture effects.”
Visually, the movie is a treat. It stays true to Yukinobu Tatsu’s original manga style, while experimenting with new animation methods that push the envelope for Season 2. The voice cast also returns in full force, with Shion Wakayama as Momo and Natsuki Hanae as Okarun leading the charge.
If you missed the theatrical release, no worries. Evil Eye is basically a trailer for Season 2, it puts together the first three episodes, that are going to be released on July 3. If you have been following the show for a long time or just have found it now, this is the right moment to get on board with the craziness.
DanDaDan’s future is the brightest and weirdest it has ever been with high ratings, strong ticket sales, and a lot of excitement on the internet.
