Info in Movie news | The movie business is riding a strong wave right now, and that momentum is fueling interest in long-anticipated projects. One of the most talked-about is Deeper, a high-concept underwater thriller that’s finally surfacing with Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas as its leads.
According to Deadline, Ana de Armas is negotiating the terms of being the co-star in Deeper, a movie that Doug Liman is directing; the same Liman who directed Edge of Tomorrow and American Made. The script is being adjusted by Christopher McQuarrie, one of the Mission: Impossible movie series’ main writers, who has always been Tom Cruise's long-time partner in the creative process. With that team, expectations are naturally high.
Cruise will be starring in the character of an astronaut in Deeper who goes on a mission to make the deepest ocean trench dive ever; however, he is going to meet a mysterious and terrifying supernatural force. De Armas is all set for playing a major part in the hazardous deep-sea mission, adding emotional gravity and action to Cruise's character.
After an almost 10-year long development, the movie eventually managed to hit the screens. Max Landis first penned the script, which was later picked up by MGM in 2016. However, it was put on ice since then, as there were several different versions that were all abandoned, including some that involved Bradley Cooper, Idris Elba, and director Baltasar Kormákur. Now, with Cruise, de Armas, Liman, and McQuarrie all in the mix, Deeper finally looks ready to dive into production.
GamesRadar reports that Cruise and de Armas have already started diving training together, indicating just how serious they are about delivering authenticity for their roles. They’ve been seen preparing for physically demanding underwater sequences, a hallmark of Liman’s immersive directing style.
The movie's production cost is approximately $200 million, no wonder it’s called one of the big-ticket sci-fi thrillers not part of a franchise till date. Warner Bros. has officially abandoned the project, commenting that the price is too high for them to risk, while other studio majors are still having intensive negotiations. No release date has been confirmed, but the proccess producting is expected to begin after Cruise wraps Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (May 2025) and de Armas completes the John Wick spinoff Ballerina (June 2025).
In a recent interview with Good Morning America, de Armas hinted that she and Cruise are collaborating on multiple projects, including this one. Both stars appear excited by the challenge, and their off-screen training hints at a commitment to deliver something unique and intense.
Cruise and Liman are also developing a real movie to be shot in outer space with NASA and SpaceX, but according to insiders, Deeper may go into production first. Given the scale, cast, and story, Deeper is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about original thrillers of the decade.
Stay tuned for more as this ambitious project plunges closer to the surface.
