Info in movie News | More than 25 years after the release of 10 Things I Hate About You, director Gil Junger is officially working on a brand-new trilogy that expands the beloved story, but with a twist. This new project is the complete opposite of a teen rom-com, as it will deal with the adult world of love which is difficult, funny, and at times, very emotional.
The trilogy that will be released in the near future has been given three new titles namely, 10 Things I Hate About Dating, 10 Things I Hate About Marriage, and 10 Things I Hate About Kids. If we look at the 1999 movie, it was all about the high school drama and the first love of the children, this series is a shift in direction, and we are going to see what happens after that, things like swiping right, living through the marriage, and raising kids.
According to a report from People, Junger is teaming up with screenwriter Naya Elle James for all three scripts. Andrew Lazar, known for producing American Sniper, is also on board as a producer. The first movie, 10 Things I Hate About Dating, is already in development for a full theatrical release.
Junger says the movies will speak to a slightly older crowd this time. The goal is to reflect the lives of people in their 30s who once grew up loving the original. “We're not making this for teenagers,” Junger said, noting that the stories are meant to feel real and relatable to adults dealing with the chaos of modern love and family life.
In a surprising twist, 10 Things I Hate About Dating will draw loose inspiration from The Misanthrope, a 1666 satirical play by French writer Molière. Just as the original movie reimagined Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, this new story will carry its own mix of classic roots and modern themes.
As for the cast, Junger has kept details under wraps. Still, he hinted at possible appearances from familiar faces like Julia Stiles, who played Kat Stratford in the original movie. He also mentioned actor Larry Miller, who portrayed Kat’s overprotective dad, as someone he would love to bring back if the story fits. “If the original cast wants to come back in any way, even just for cameos, I’d be thrilled,” Junger shared.
One name that won’t return, sadly, is Heath Ledger. The actor, who played the unforgettable Patrick Verona, passed away in 2008. Junger says he now plans to dedicate the new trilogy in Ledger’s memory. “That’s a beautiful idea. He deserves to be loved and remembered,” he said.
The original 10 Things I Hate About You remains a fan-favorite, even inspiring a short-lived TV series and an upcoming Broadway musical by Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen.
With a mature spin and the same heart that made the original a classic, this trilogy is shaping up to be both nostalgic and refreshingly new. While there’s no official release date yet, one thing is clear, 10 Things is growing up, just like its fans.
