Info in Movie News | Get ready to return to the Lands Between, but this time on the big screen. Elden Ring, the globally acclaimed action RPG from FromSoftware, is officially getting a movie adaptation. After months of speculation, it’s now confirmed that indie studio A24 is taking the lead, with Alex Garland directing and writing the movie. Known for his work on Ex Machina and Civil War, Garland is no stranger to ambitious projects and will now take on one of A24’s most challenging productions to date.
According to Collider, the movie will center on the Tarnished, the mysterious outcast who journeys through the shattered realm of the Lands Between. In the game, players shape their own version of the character, but the movie is expected to give the Tarnished a more developed arc while retaining the core of the original story, a quest to become Elden Lord by overcoming demigods and ancient powers.
George R.R. Martin, who helped to define the game’s deep lore and world-building, is going to be the executive producer. He’ll have Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich of DNA movies, and Vince Gerardis joining him in doing the series. This really is the reunion of a big group of minds well-known for their complex narratives and vast universes that everyone has missed.
Elden Ring has a universe over several shrines such as open fields of Limgrave, the worn-out desolate plains of Caelid, and from the divine gardens of Leyndell. The complete details are not disclosed yet but the fact that Ranni, Radahn, Melina, and Blaidd are going to be some of the characters that are appearing in the game. is a sure thing. Garland, on one hand, is burdened with an exclusive task of, not only transposing the subtleness and player-driven discovery of the game into a successful cinematic experience but also amusing the audience.
Garland has already shown he has the capability to confront heavy themes and the right moment for this. His recent movie Civil War became one of A24’s most successful releases, and his earlier projects like Annihilation and 28 Days Later showcased his skill in blending genre with philosophy and emotion. That makes him an ideal choice to navigate the philosophical darkness of Elden Ring.
Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game’s director, previously expressed interest in letting other creatives interpret FromSoftware’s titles. “I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie, for example,” Miyazaki said last year. “But I don’t think myself or FromSoftware have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play.”
With Garland and A24 on board, the adaptation is already drawing excitement from fans and critics alike. While there’s no release date yet, the project is officially underway, and updates are expected over the coming months.
Meanwhile, fans won’t have to wait long to return to the world of Elden Ring. The new multiplayer spin-off Elden Ring Nightreign is launching on May 30 for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. Until then, the Lands Between prepares to rise again, this time in theaters.
